Decorated Admiral and former Congressman Joe Sestak (D. PA) points out Tea Party Senator Pat Toomey's (R. PA) abysmal record in the U.S. Senate when it comes to our veterans:
In yesterday’s Philadelphia Daily News, its editorial board headlined “NO SALUTE FOR PAT” because of Sen. Pat Toomey's votes against veterans.
The editorial continued, “There's one veteran who may very well benefit from Sen. Toomey's vote, considering the nearly 1 million veterans who live in Pennsylvania: former Congressman Joe Sestak … a former U.S. Navy three-star admiral.”
Admiral Sestak has been a leader for those who serve -- in the Navy and in Congress: voting for those with traumatic brain injury and other disabilities, as well as our homeless vets, with the largest funding increase in the history of the Veterans Administration (VA); sponsoring legislation that targeted the unique health care needs of women vets; pioneering a study on post-traumatic stress disorder; restoring VA healthcare for those veterans living just above the poverty line who lost their eligibility during the underfunded years of the Bush Administration; and advancing a bill that expanded small business opportunities for veterans, as well as the GI Bill for Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans.
It is why the Daily News Editorial Board wrote: “veterans are furious” as Toomey has voted against every VA funding bill, filibustered the Veterans Jobs Act, and saying "nay" on the Veterans Health and Benefits bill two weeks ago -- after having voted for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as a congressman.
The editorial explained, “Sen. Pat Toomey has angered a lot of his constituents lately … Despite proclaiming himself a champion of veterans and making grandiose statements about our society's obligation to take care of them, Sen. Toomey was one of 41 Senators - all Republicans - who defeated a recent bill that would have expanded veterans' benefits and restored a cost-of-living pension cut.” This is just “another example of the poisonous partisan intransigence that has paralyzed Washington since President Obama took office.”
Join me in supporting Admiral Sestak, a leader who wants to end this harmful partisanship – especially for our veterans now caught in a Senate that just doesn't care: having sent them to war, and now unable, or unwilling, to help those who returned.
