The botched healthcare.gov rollout was a blemish on the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. It got slammed by all, and it was deserved. The goals of Obamacare were never altruistic, they were never liberal dreams of free health care and services or punitive attacks on the wealthy.
The goals were simple: Every American deserved health care insurance they could afford. And every American deserved a minimum level of health care. One would believe that every politician would agree with this basic concept. If one looks at society in the aggregate, a society has some rate at which people get sick. Absent some big change in externalities, one would expect that rate to be relatively constant.
The unfettered capitalist business model expects neverending growth. Notice that even when a company is profitable, if its growth rate is zero, its stock tumbles.
The reason many in business hate Obamacare is simple. Given that America's illness rate is basically constant, and given that companies always want to show growth, this can only occur by incessantly raising health care prices.
Please read below the fold for more on this story.
Obamacare attempts to control price increases effected simply for the sake of growth and profits of businesses at the expense of the working middle class (e.g, duplicate testing, etc.). Many more areas in Obamacare will need to be revisited; drug manufacturers and hospitals will need to be reined in. Insurance companies will need to be eventually abolished in favor of a more efficient Medicare for all system.
Health care does not fall into the same model as other capitalist ventures. One has the choice to buy a flatscreen or not. One cannot decide if they will get sick or want a broken leg fixed.
Society must always protect against uncontrolled vulnerabilities. Obamacare is a start. It is working as designed. According to Gallup, the uninsured rate is falling at a very steep clip.
The uninsured rate has been declining since the fourth quarter of 2013, after hitting an all-time high of 18.0% in the third quarter. The uninsured rate for the first quarter of 2014 so far includes a 16.2% reading for January and 15.6% for February. …
The uninsured rate continues to decline after the requirement to have health insurance went into effect on Jan. 1, 2014. This drop could be a result of the ACA, which aims to provide healthcare coverage to more Americans through multiple provisions, including federal and state healthcare marketplaces where Americans can purchase health insurance coverage at competitive rates.
The curve of health cost has bent. This is not solely as a result of the recession, as many who oppose Obamacare would attempt to make this part of the narrative.
This comprehensive report debunks that fallacy once and for all.
None of this is simple conjecture. My own health insurance situation was dramatically improved with Obamacare. View other real success stories here.
Americans must not allow moneyed interests to be successful in its attack against middle class-centric policies. The only concern of moneyed interests is to pilfer the working middle class to maintain an unearned way of life.
