I've seen so much ignorant punditry this election cycle, it is difficult to even read posts by publications I respect and read every day. Since Republicans have decided their main issue this election season is over a policy that is the law of the land, upheld by the Supreme Court, and ratified by a national election, pundits have now decided that is the thing upon which another election cycle hinges. The Republican issue is the issue. Bullshit.
Republicans have voted to repeal Obamacare 50 times. Nothing. They've sued in courts to stop it, going all the way to the highest court in the land. Nothing. They made it the central issue of a national election and lost. They've run millions of dollars in ads against it. Yet millions keep signing up for it. Republicans actually shut down the government over it and even that failed because of opposition from the public.
The issue of Obamacare, by the law, by the voters, and by consumers, is settled. Republican politicians may want to re-litigate Obamacare again, but as far as the courts and the government is concerned this is a done deal. Democrats need to make this case as it is the only case that needs be made for Obamacare. That is how you unite Democrats around the message for Obamacare. It's the law, move on. If Republicans want to talk about the past, let them. Democrats should be talking about the future. We've got a lot of problems to fix.
Washington and New York reporters and pundits need to begin asking Republicans where is their platform for the rest of the country, and not just the psycho obsessions of their own base. They need to ask why is Obamacare the only thing that unites the Republican Party while being split on everything else. Why do Republican politicians keep lying to their own base that they can repeal it?
The media is giving Republicans a free ride here. They're giving Republicans plenty of spotlight to bloviate on the president's manliness but very little attention to Republican positions on issues that voters care about. And of course, they seem to think the American public wants to spend a lot of time talking about Obamacare. Let me give you reporters and pundits a clue if you actually want to make some news: Why are Republicans so obsessed with Obamacare and not the real problems of people who aren't the GOP base? Get to the bottom of that and you've got the story of this election.
