Francis Wilkinson:
Let's say your mental landscape is similar to that of Colby Sue Weathers back in 2012: suicidal, homicidal, paranoid, schizophrenic. Oh, and with a drug and alcohol problem. You are too disabled by mental illness -- schizophrenia was diagnosed in 2011 -- and recurring hospitalizations to work. You are not great about maintaining your psychotropic drug regimen, which you administer inconsistently and sometimes to woozy excess. And you have an occasional hankering, occasionally satisfied, to consume a fifth of liquor. In other words, your life is utterly out of control.
One trouble you probably don't have -- provided you live in the U.S. -- is gaining access to a lethal firearm. [...]
[I]n late June, the voices in Weathers's head told her to buy another gun and kill herself. Having observed her daughter's agitation, Delana said she called Odessa Gun & Pawn on June 25, and alerted an employee to her daughter's chronic mental illness and current suicidal state. She asked that the shop refrain from selling Weathers a gun. Two days later, Weathers turned up at Odessa and bought another Hi-Point pistol. Weathers drove home, loaded two bullets and shot her father. "Dad is dead," she texted her mother. He was.
Blast from the Past. At Daily Kos on this date in 2013—GOP self-evaluation is deluded from page one:
The GOP releases a shiny new report on why the party sucks so bad, yet they can't get out of the first page before dishing bullshit.
At the federal level, much of what Republicans are doing is not working beyond the core constituencies that make up the Party. On the state level, however, it is a different story.
Republicans hold governorships in 30 states with 315 electoral votes, the most governors either party has had in 12 years, and four short of the all-time GOP high of 34 governors who served in the 1920s.

Seriously? They're going to sit there and pretend, in their honest and soul-searching self-assessment, that 2010 wasn't an atypical fluke?
Yes, Republicans won a bunch of governorships in 2010. But despite a favorable map, Republicans picked up only a single governorship in 2012—North Carolina. They failed in highly touted pick-up attempts in New Hampshire, Montana, Missouri and West Virginia (the latter three delivering easy wins for Mitt Romney). Republicans came shockingly close to losing their seat in Indiana, despite that race never getting on anyone's radar.
