On the Catholic League website, writing under his byline, Bill Donahue calls for a boycott of the three beer companies that withdrew support from a few Saint Patrick's Day Parades because they discriminate against gay marchers. In the piece he says:
The parade is quintessentially Catholic, beginning with a Mass in St. Patrick’s Cathedral. It is this Catholic element that angers those who are engaged in a bullying campaign against the St. Patrick’s Day parades. The bullies also have nothing but contempt for the constitutional rights of Irish Catholics.
In 1995, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 9-0 decision that the First Amendment guarantees the right of private parade organizers to determine its own rules for marching. It is this liberty that the makers of Guinness, Heineken, and Sam Adams want to squash.
So many conservatives never seem to fathom that the same First Amendment they whine about also guarantees the right of others to protest their bigoted pronouncements and actions, and that includes withdrawing support from events. Clearly feathers have been ruffled, but no one's First Amendment rights have been trampled.
For the convenience of his readers, at the bottom of his lament he lists 3 emails for his followers to use to contact the beer companies that withdrew their commitment in order to inform them that the boycott has been joined.
Maybe we can make that backfire. Please visit the page and follow those same email links to let the companies know how much you are against the boycott and how much you approve of their decision. Wouldn't it be great if this went viral and instead of mainly negative responses they got overwhelmingly favorable ones? This could happen if enough people contact their friends (social media and otherwise) and asked them to do the same.
