Arkansas governor Mike Beebe looks on during a Martin Luther King Jr. service in Little Rock, Arkansas in this January 15, 2013 Governor's office handout photo obtained by Reuters March 6, 2013.   Arkansas was set to enact the nation's most restrictive la
Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe, still a Democrat, and not beaten by the Kochs yet.
The Koch brothers have spent a whopping $1.4+ million this year fighting Obamacare. In Arkansas alone. Just in television ads. But their advocacy against the health of the people of Arkansas hasn't just been in ads.
Americans for Prosperity opened their Arkansas office in June 2009. Since then, the state legislature and senate gained a Republican majority for the first time since Reconstruction, and AFP-AR has grown to include over 63,000 volunteers and has more Facebook likes as a percentage of the state population -- 34,000 -- than any other AFP office in the country. Teresa Oelke, the first state director of AFP-AR, has been promoted to vice president of state operations. In 2012, the group spent over $500,000 on state legislative races, and has spent well over that already in 2014.

AFP also thinks that, at least in Arkansas, they've got the left beat at the Internet game. Cline says, "If you look at what the left has been able to accomplish with social media, in Arkansas, we are significantly ahead of the folks on the other end of the political spectrum from ourselves, and it's noted by everyone." Tim Phillips, the organization's president, notes that their "data folks" have been instrumental in choosing where to canvass. And they've now focused all this might on fighting the Affordable Care Act and the Democrats in Arkansas who supported it, Mark Pryor getting special attention. And after failing to stop the "private option" Medicaid expansion from getting passed in the conservative state legislature in April 2013, they're itching for another victory. Turning out those voters who already are sympathetic to their messaging is key.

And yet, they lost the fight on Medicaid expansion, in 2013 and again this year when they tried to get the legislature to rescind it. They failed. They've spent millions and millions to buy Arkansans, and haven't managed to accomplish that. It's reminiscent of the $407+ million they spent to lose nationally in 2012. So, have at it guys. You're setting yourselves up as the best enemy Democrats ever had.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

is basically a business expense. They make money by poisoning the environment, so its worth it to them to do this, again and again. They aren't going to stop.

I don't know what will happen, but it is my hope that this tidal wave of spending on their part will backfire. If we let people know about it, in time people willc ome to resent their meddling, and a larger percentage of the population will know how much sway billionaires really have now.

The other thing that might do it, is the amount of dishonesty in these ads. We have to let everyone know just how full of crap they are.

I wish the prospects were brighter (and bluer) for my adopted state (and my native state of TX as well) but if Mark Pryor doesn't quit trying to be R-Lite, we're going to be solid red at the federal level as of next year.  The local level is pretty red, too.  And well, the Rs own the Lege and are hoping for the Statehouse - and Mike Ross may be a Blue Dog (may be hell, he ran the dam thing) but he's better than what the Rs are running.

I've said it before; these guys are spending hundreds of millions to set themselves up as the fall guys on global warming when the negative impacts of climate chance become worse. And spending more millions of $ to block millions of Americans from gaining healthcare (that can't be dropped be insurers when you need it), will only reinforce the boogeyman image they're painting for themselves. Numbskulls.

Because they are avaricious bastards for whom enough is never enough.

Because the 1% want to buy our democracy. Again.

Because they believe themselves racially and intellectually superior.

Because in their insular world, like most modern oligarchs, they were handed their fortune. They let talented managers make them richer. They then take the credit and present themselves as captains of industry. The rest of the 1% cheated and stole their way to the top.
