If the Republicans are going to control both house and senate as is possible I would rather them do so now rather than later.
The party will face a difficult map again in 2014, however. Twenty-one of the 35 seats up for election are now held by Democrats. Moreover, most the states that will be casting ballots for the Senate in 2014 are Republican leaning: 7 of the 21 Democratic-held seats are in states carried by the former Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, while just one of the Republican seats is in a state won by President Obama.
After the gerrymandering last time around the Republicans are unlikely according to the" common wisdom" [which can be anything but] going around.
Even if the Democratic party can squeak a win and maintain a narrow control of the senate we will still have the same mess as we do now.
However
If the Republicans take the senate we will have full blown crazy and still be lucky enough to have President Obama to wield a veto pen.
The Republicans will have a Benghazi conspiracy fest [and a dozen other conspiracy fests at least] and try to repeal the ACA, they will also have an even harder time controlling their craziest elements [they are all a little unhinged but they have some stellar talent in the real nutcase department].
OK so nothing gets done before 2016, is anything likely to get done before then anyway?
Perhaps if they go absolutely crazy enough this will clear the air for 2016.
I hear a lot that the following wind might be behind the Republican Party, but between now and November many Americans might just realize it is naught but a noxious emission.
So if the electorate are cray enough to give the Republican Party [even after the disaster that was George] then I would rather they do so in 2014 than in 2016. I would rather neither but the way things go from side to side at some point they will win again.
So instead of scorched earth we have a limited and controlled burn because I really do hate to think of what the Republicans would do [we would probably be amassing troops somewhere near Russia [probably the Maldives knowing their sense of geography] and scaring the hell out of everyone else] if they have total control again. I have yet to be convinced that Hillary is a foregone conclusion in a Presidential campaign.
So fingers crossed that the GOP goes nuts enough between now and November to dissuade the electorate but I wouldn't count on it, better they have a crazy fest now with a President we know than at some point in the near future.
