GUS (Gave Up Smoking) is a community support diary for Kossacks in the midst of quitting smoking. Any supportive comments, suggestions or positive distractions are appreciated. If you are quitting or even just thinking of quitting, please join us! We kindly ask that politics be left outside.

A message to ALL quitters (and would-be quitters): You don't have to avoid GUS if you have a failed quit.
We won't give you a bad time or nag you. We consider the failed quits as "practice" for the real quit.
It may not always seem so, on the surface, but we're a tough bunch here. Most of us have faced our share of struggles, some of us from very early on. We don't get a level playing field in this life, and many of us have had to cope with life circumstances---physical or emotional abuse and neglect at home; sexism, racism, homophobia, or discrimination of some sort; anxiety or depression (or some super-fun combination of both); grief and loss; financial or workplace issues; strained or broken relationships; major illness in ourselves or loved ones---that can derail even the most optimistic person among us.
Those experiences shape our view of the world, as well as inform our coping skills and impact our innate resilience in the face of challenges. Unfortunately for us, those struggles are also one of the things that leaves many of us vulnerable to addiction. But as I noted, we're a pretty tough bunch. And that's a good thing, because behavioral change is hard, y'all! People attempting to modify deeply ingrained behaviors must undertake a conscious process of learning how to live their lives differently, moment to moment, for as long as it takes (and it can take a while). Throw in a physiological component and you've got a whole lot of stuff going on.
The process of change can be a little overwhelming. When attempting this kind of change, things in our day-to-day lives tend to fall through the cracks a bit. We may be temporarily forgetful, or so focused on handling our quit that we let other things slide. Even the most routine things may not happen the way we're used to, because---well, because we're in the middle of disrupting a big part of our daily routine on purpose.
It's not just little things, either; our jobs and relationships may suffer too, at least in the short-term. It can be frustrating, disheartening, even scary. Don't be put off by that. Whatever the [temporary] downside, it's worth it.
It also helps to remind ourselves that we're not just letting things fall through the cracks, we're actually pushing our way up through them too.
We're like those tough little sidewalk flowers you see dotting the landscape: defying the odds, taking the path of least resistance when we have to, making the circumstances we find ourselves in work for us, and blossoming, despite everything.

Have you had some experience with the effects of smoking, and want to write a GUS diary or host an open thread? Please sign up in the Butt Can (Tip Jar), and name the day and time that works for you (AM, PM, late-night, early-bird). The weekly GUS Diary Schedule (regular diarists featured in bold) is below. There's an open slot just calling your name!
Wed PM: Vacationland
Thu AM: Open (nokkonwud on hiatus?)
Thu PM: Open
Fri AM: flumptytail
Fri PM: Open
Sat AM: paulitics
Sat PM: Open
Sun AM: gchaucer2
Sun PM: Open
Mon AM: anodnhajo
Mon PM: Open
Tue AM: gchaucer2
Tue PM: Open
Wed AM: Open
If you can spare a few hours, please consider hosting GUS. It doesn't have to be a permanent slot; it can be a one-time deal or just an open thread! Not sure where to start? Just ask for help in the Butt Can (Tip Jar). Seriously, it doesn't have to include specific elements or require all sorts of fabulous diary formatting skills. The regulars will make sure stuff gets carried over from diary to diary, so if you want to just tell your story or provide an open thread and host for a few hours, that's cool too. You do not need to be perfect, you do not need to become a regular, and you would make some quitters very happy.
