Here is what Europe means to Ukraine.  More than a hundred people gave their lives for Occupy Kiev. Note the crowd reaction when the brass section comes in, and then the chorus:

A similar event happened when the Berlin Wall came down.

Today this is the national anthem of the European Union and the Council of Europe.

Three months ago Ukraine as a country was being given to the Russia of oligarchs, Putin, and corruption. Now apart from the 4% of it called Crimea, which is 77% Russian anyway, here is a different future.

Odessa Musicians for Peace and Brotherhood (from the city orchestra and opera chorus) sing the first stanza and part of the second before ending back with the first.

"Ode An die Freude"
by Friedrich Schiller
-- translation below to English

Freude schöner Götterfunken
Tochter aus Elysium,
Wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!
Deine Zauber binden wieder
Was die Mode streng geteilt;
Alle Menschen werden Brüder,
Wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt.

Wem der große Wurf gelungen,
Eines Freundes Freund zu sein;
Wer ein holdes Weib errungen,
Mische seinen Jubel ein!
Ja, wer auch nur eine Seele
Sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund!
Und wer's nie gekonnt, der stehle
Weinend sich aus diesem Bund!

Freude trinken alle Wesen
An den Brüsten der Natur;
Alle Guten, alle Bösen
Folgen ihrer Rosenspur.
Küsse gab sie uns und Reben,
Einen Freund, geprüft im Tod;
Wollust ward dem Wurm gegeben,
und der Cherub steht vor Gott.

wie seine Sonnen fliegen
Durch des Himmels prächt'gen Plan,
Laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn,
Freudig, wie ein Held zum Siegen.

Seid umschlungen, Millionen!
Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt!
Brüder, über'm Sternenzelt
Muß ein lieber Vater wohnen.
Ihr stürzt nieder, Millionen?
Ahnest du den Schöpfer, Welt?
Such' ihn über'm Sternenzelt!
Über Sternen muß er wohnen.

"Ode to Joy"
Translation in English

Joy, bright spark of divinity,
Daughter of Elysium,
Fire-inspired we tread
Thy sanctuary.
Thy magic power re-unites
All that custom has divided,
All men become brothers
Under the sway of thy gentle wings.

Whoever has created
An abiding friendship,
Or has won a true and loving wife,
Join in our song of praise,
Yes, all who can call at least one soul
Theirs upon this earth;
But any who cannot must creep tearfully
Away from our circle.

All creatures drink of joy
At nature's breast.
Just and unjust
Alike taste of her gift;
She gave us kisses and the fruit of the vine,
A tried friend to the end.
Even the worm can feel contentment,
And the cherub stands before God!

As His heavenly bodies fly
On their courses through the heavens,
Thus, brothers, you should run your race,
As a hero going to conquest.

You millions, I embrace you.
This kiss is for all the world!
Brothers, above the starry canopy
There must dwell a loving Father.
Do you fall in worship, you millions?
World, do you know your creator?
Seek him in the heavens;
Above the stars must He dwell.

Schiller inspired Beethoven and Beethoven inspires the whole world.  The fourth movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, the Choral with Ode to Joy as the common text.

Europe is hardly a deist center of belief these days. But the best of what Christianity has produced carries forward undiminished.

We can all live up to this, toward their standard.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

    When I found video of this a couple days ago I posted it to Facebook.  Thank you for doing the same here.

    The Stars and Bars and the red swastika banner are both offerings to the same barbaric god.

    This sort of thing has been happening since the Berlin Wall came down.

    Authoritarianism and corruption are not popular.

    Like Kiev, Odessa is an amazing place. Beethoven is popular there, you betcha. He was a Liberal in the best sense.

    by protests in the Eu countries against imf/eu imposed austerity I find the socalled occupy keiv movement enthusiasm for eu citizenship to be quit bizarre, particularly given that the appointed Prime Minister has promised to follow the Greek model!

      One of the main reasons for the austerity program that any incoming administration in Ukraine will have to agree is the Russian gas supplies now being charged at world market rates (ie what is being charged to the EU) rather than the highly reduced rate that was part of the reason the previous president thought himself able to refuse to sign the Association Agreement.

      The people of Ukraine are not stupid and can see the very real improvements in both the economy and human rights and democracy that EU membership brings in their immediately neighbouring countries like Poland and Slovakia with Romania and Hungary bringing up the rear.

      Maybe you forget, the Greeks have failed to follow the Greek model which is why they are in such dire straits at the moment. Nice how you fail to mention Ireland which has recovered since introducing austerity or, come to that, Estonia which went through a period of "internal devaluation" but is now prospering.

      •  Maybe because (5+ / 0-)

        the fact that they paid off their loan is hardly an indication of recovery and the irish unemployment rate and poverty rate are still appalling!  The recovery is a lie that only the imf bankers believe.

        Prof. H: Your unemployment is intentional policy by the Irish leadership, of both parties. None of this unemployment is necessary. It doesn’t have to be this way. The government was suckered in to paying the debts for its corrupt bankers.

        The problem is that even when you Irish did – as you should have done – and voted out the party in power, the incoming party has the same policy as the former one. It’s much like the United States, where we voted out Republican George Bush, and then got an even more Republican Democrat – Barack Obama. They all promise change, and then follow the financial sector’s directions.

        So the underlying problem is that there is no body of theory or policy in Ireland to show that there is an alternative to this unemployment. There’s a belief, a Thatcherite belief that There Is No Alternative, and of course there is an alternative! You shouldn’t have paid uninsured bank depositors and bondholders, and you should not have to pay the European Central Bank, the I.M.F. or the other parties that misinformed you by telling your leaders that the cost of government bailouts would be easily managed, not a lost decade and economic disaster.

        You should establish as a basic legal principle of international law that no country should be obliged to pay foreign debts at the price of driving out 10 – 20% of its population, at the price of austerity, an....... the rest

        Who said they were stupid.  Who said the protests represent the majority of Ukrainians.

    The European Anthem is the "Ode to Joy" only in the "universal language of music". That is, it is not sung. It is though, very difficult not to join in if you know the words.

    The very opening in performance is the principal singer inviting the chorus to join in with "Freunde" or "Friends". At the unification of Germany ceremony at the Berlin Wall, that cry was "Freiheit" or "Freedom".

    Europe is my "heimat" of which my country is a part. Ukranians clearly agree and share the hopes of friendship, peace, freedom and prosperity for all embodied in the twelve starred flag and anthem. Such a shame that Czar Putin has led the Russian people to creep tearfully away.

    •  Except that people almost always sing it. (0+ / 0-)

      Rewriting the lyric for the unification ceremony is roundly disapproved. Schiller's poem is the whole reason Beethoven wrote this music.

    I suspect it is not Ode to Joy.

    1) I was amused that the New York Times touted loudly that the vote in the UN  condemning Russia for annexing Crimea had passed --but failed to note that Iraq had Abstained.   Strange given their economic dependency on the US.

    Of course, given how the New York Times promoted an unnecessary war that killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqi citizens, maybe it is best for the Times to not inquire too closely.
