At this point, Sam, my chihuahua I mentioned in previous posts, is doing very well on his medication. As I noted, I stopped using the emergency vet for prescriptions because of the outrageous markup for them. I have been going to a local department store pharmacy for two of the three pills, which cost very minimal (50 cents to 2 bucks a month), and going to another vet clinic, which charges "only" 40 dollars for a 50-day supply of Pimobendin. This is a far cry from spending 150 a month for these pills to the emergency vet.
As I wrote previously, I thought I would get back on track with the substitute jobs once the Medford teachers' strike ended. Well, that didn't exactly happen.
There was a two-week long teachers' strike in February, and I have yet to get back on track because there was so little need for substitutes this last month (I did not cross the picket line during the school district strike). Virtually nobody in either certified or classified work for the Medford School District or the surrounding districts took any time off or else they already had people picked to cover for them. As a result of this dearth of work (this also happened at the same time last year, by the way), I made only 80 dollars for a half-day's work for one of the two agencies for which I substitute teach/teacher assist. I have needed funds for gas, for one payment on a bill, for storage unit rent, for dogs' NutriCal, flea control, and heart medication (40 dollars for the meds). I feel like absolute shit even mentioning this because it seems like a habit rather than the fact work has been so skimpy since the end of January. It should--SHOULD--be a whole lot better after spring break. School resumes for all of the districts in Jackson County, Oregon, next week. If last year is any indication at all, there will be a lot more demand for subs as the year starts winding down. Medford at least will be in session until June 17, so any cash flow issue will last only about a month or six weeks unless I miraculously find a summer job.
I hope I NEVER have to post this sort of thing again. I wouldn't be if I were able to get check advance from the bank, but I have at least two months to go before I can use it thanks to having had to use the thing for nine consecutive accounting periods. The advance is on hold right now.
I am currently looking for regular work for the school districts, both certified and classified, but have not received any interviews yet. It's still early for hiring for next year, so I am hopeful, despite my age and being underemployed for the past six years, I will finally find steady, regular work. I did get teacher certification a couple of weeks ago (applied last fall) and am working on getting licensing in another subject area.
I am optimistic things will get better.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks to everybody who helped out previously.
