The word Liberal used to be used with pride then Conservatives came up with an idea "what if we turn the word Liberal into a dirty word?". To achieve their goal they used the word Liberal in negative terms every chance they could. Over time this anchored the word Liberal with negative ideas and associations. Over time they only needed to say the word for the other associations to automatically pop into people's minds.

The last major voice to stand up to attacks on the word Liberal was perhaps JFK in his famous quote of “If by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people-their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties-someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal", then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal.”

To rebuild the image the Left pivoted to use the word Progressive.

So what are Conservatives doing now to re-anchor the word Progressive with negative emotions? In addition to all their commentators, media outlets and politicians using the word Progressive in conjunction with negative emotions they have also enrolled Big Pharma to bombard America with constant paid media using the word Progressive in a negative medical term. From "Progressively worse" to "Progressive disease" they constantly are re-anchoring the main word to describe our values in emotions that are highly negative.

Pharmaceutical ads to the public are illegal in EVERY single country in the world except the US and New Zealand. They are illegal because they are telling people "Hey, you're sick! ...and here's the solution!" Their ads, designed to make people feel the pain or issue they are trying to sold are immoral and deceptive. In the US we need to outlaw pharmaceutical ads and kill two birds with one stone, destroy the main media outlet destroying the word that stands for our values and improve public health.

In the meantime we can begin using the phrase Conservative Disease to begin re-anchoring the word Conservative to negative emotions, negative emotions that all Conservative values should be automatically linked to.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

As any political campaign. It would take designing a game plan and building the infrastructure. Establish a think tank who's mission is to research and communicate why pharmaceutical advertising hurts consumers, lobby allied Progressive groups, elected officials and the media to communicate the message of why they need to end.

Once a base of information has sunk into the general public begin lobbying state legislators to begin restricting pharmaceutical advertising. It's easier to lobby local officials than US Congress, although the restrictions won't be as good as getting Congress to outlaw prescription drug ads. My thought is it'll be a start; build momentum.

Another method would be singling out a single broadcast station in a single media market and lobby them privately to stop big pharma ads, if they refuse use the Cesar Chavez method (although I'm sure he wasn't the first to do this) of building public press/ a boycott of the station. They key would be ensuring its done big enough to hurt their viewership, not just getting them publicity and potentially building the station's ratings.

I agree pharm advertising should be illegal, or at least way more restricted than it is.

But the word "progressive" has been used medically for more than a century. Is that part of your article snark?

    •  I know it's been used for a long time (0+ / 0-)

But I have a feeling if the phrase had been "conservative disease" or "conservatively worse" they would not be using it in their advertising. They could easily use the word increasingly or compoundingly instead of progressively.

and I remember when they first aired, I thought this is bizarre.  However, speaking as a non-lawyer, I have to wonder if regulating or banning them might be a free speech First Amendment issue - at least that would certainly be the defense.  Although cigarette ads have been banned and alcohol ads are regulated, so perhaps something could still be done.  I'm with you.
