As well as voting in Presidential And Midterm Elections, Local Elections Are Also, Very Important.
Remember, you need to bring your DMV (dept of motor vehicles) id.
Local elections are important because local town/city leaders are elected.
These elections also cover many important issues. Like School board elections, Teacher Contracts, School budget funding, taxes, and other things, ie what your local community does with federal funding. Where that funding goes and how it is spent; schools, infrastructure, etc.
I'm a NJ transplant to the town where I now live.
Been here about seven years. I really don't know a lot of people like I did back in Hudson County.
I wanted to vote because I always vote.
Voter turnout was 1,442 out of 6,200 registered voters.
2014 Midterm Elections Action Alert/Even More Political Activism Needed ♥ A Very Busy Year
I had no idea what this election was about, so I googled it. The local newspaper; (online), had all the info I needed. I familiarized myself with the candidates and issues.
I almost fainted, when I was handed a three page ballot (paper-2 sides each),with questions.
Good thing I was prepared. I managed to steady myself and read them all.
There were; not only School Board and Selectman Candidates, there were questions, regarding funding for things like, the local Meals on Wheels, A Food Pantry, Bus Service (a little ten seater), a proposed 2.5 percent school Tax Cap, School Budget, Teacher's Contracts, Town Operating Budget and more.
The teacher contract was approved, 766 to 633. That was close. 133 votes. Yes, everyone's vote counts. School budget also approved.
It was fun though. Always a great party atmosphere at the polling place. Although it's a little subdued around here.
In NJ, everyone knew me since I was a baby and I'd have many conversations in and out when voting.
It was like, "I'm here, your favorite Democrat". The Polls, always the place to see old friends.
I spoke to one of the ladies running for the School Board. She was so nice.
And I spoke to two people promoting the 501c bus service. The request for the funding failed. 628 to 773. Rejected by 145 votes. So close.
It's good because it's good publicity for this bus, that so few people know about or how to use.
It does show that there's a lot of interest in keeping the bus.
For $3 each stop, this bus comes to your home and brings you back. They were asking for $4,000 funding from the town and the Selectman didn't want to give it to them.
So it was on the ballot. Rural transportation is abysmal. This is the only bus (except for the Senior Center) for miles around. And they don't want to give them four thousand dollars because the bus gets federal funding. A very important reason to vote, right there.
There really was no choice with the Selectman. They're here and well established and their bio's sounded nice.
It was either the two who didn't think the bus was necessary. Or a guy who's opening sentence was "gov't is too big". Scared me off.
One of the Selectman Candidates, was a 40 year Volunteer Fireman. I voted for him and a Woman Candidate.
