University of Massachusetts basketball player Derrick Gordon publicly announced that he is gay in an interview with ESPN and Outsports, becoming perhaps the first Division 1 men's basketball player to publicly acknowledge that he is gay.
(This is, of course, a bit disputed; former Villanova basketball player Will Sheridan publicly came out of the closet after his playing career was over and had previously come out to his teammates, but so far as I know Gordon is the first to make a public announcement while he is still playing.)
From all accounts, Gordon has the support of both his coaches and his teammates. The last frontier is coming down, as college and professional (men's) sports are becoming more accepting of gay players, slowly but surely.
