A Police Badge is Not a "License to Kill"

Please tell the District Attorney to Arrest & Prosecute the Officers who murdered James Boyd.  Sign and share the Petition and Letter to DA Kari Brandeburg. — in Albuquerque, NM.

A picture tells a thousand words.  In this case - three pictures on their own should tell a story that would fill a book.

This is an unusual post for me as I am not going to write at length and allow the photo "essay" to tell the story.

If you want to know more you can view the video of the incident here:

Video APD releases HelmetCam footage of shooting from Charles Grapski on Vimeo.

Please, I urge those concerned, to contact the District Attorney and urge her to prosecute this crime.  It is the only way accountability will be brought to policing - and we will be safe in America.  Its up to us. Please share the petition widely.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I signed the petition, Charlie and thank you for alerting us to this action.

  •  Despite my best effort to (5+ / 0-)

cling to the belief that most cops are ethical and responsible — and have a hard, dirty job to do — outrageous incidents like this increasingly convince me that police organizations have become a safe harbor for cases of arrested development and angry cretins with 'manhood' issues, just itching for a chance to pull the trigger.

The provocation and senseless shooting of Charles Boyd, clearly complying and cooperating, is infuriating on a level I haven't experienced in a long time... and I'm old enough to remember Kent State.

Whatever the outcome in this case, the time is long overdue for serious mental health screening — both upon application and regularly thereafterby ALL police organizations.

Here is an issue of extreme importance - and yet no national attention.  And even here - almost no one is paying attention.

Why - I have to wonder?  Is it something wrong with what I did in giving its title or something?

Yet - the Bundy Ranch has a post - which I find highly troubling - with everyone's captivated attention.

But are they having rational discussions.  Besides a few - its just "Liberal" bashing of "Tea Party" that I see.

With both sides misunderstanding history, political philosophy, law - and fundamental rights of us ALL.

I see a parallel between the "loss of the commons" here - in the Bundy story - with the "loss of public space" that Occupy so glaringly exposed.

And no one else seems to get that.

Yet - while this story begs for attention - and help from people.  They busy themselves sounding (if we just changed some of the nouns and adjectives - but not the tone and snarky unsubtantive rant) no different than those they oppose.

It really bothers me.  And it really makes me lose hope - that we will ever truly PROGRESS.

This is my moment for "down" tempo reflection.  I'll overcome it - but it is disheartening and troubling.

The helmetcam video appears to be authentic.

All diarists — please treat with meticulous selectivity the materials you find/search to use in/for diaries, so that dubious materials don't impair verifiable facts, especially in the case of events and topics as extremely serious as this. The fact that something appears in the internet has no bearing on whether it's true or accurate or complete in its facts.

Updates to this diary that bring additional verification of this entire case would be welcome.

    •  Uh - no. The 2nd two are on PURPOSE (4+ / 0-)

The point was - I took the first one - a real photo.  Of police aiming from perhaps 50 feet away at James Boyd.

The second two - were OBVIOUSLY photoshopped.  THEY ARE THE SAME AS PHOTO ONE.  Except I put civilian clothes on the police - to CHANGE THE SCENE to a different context.

Not to claim it was a "true scene".

And the same with the third.  Where I inserted a cop where James Boyd was standing - with the civilians aiming at that person.

AND THE POINT WAS TO GET YOU TO THINK ABOUT THE SCENARIOS - their DIFFERENCES - and what would that mean for prosecutions.

I could have drawn it as a cartoon - to make the same point.  It is more powerful - when it is a real photo to start with.

And it raises questions that you are supposed to ponder.

Not try and debunk something - on a claim that is not even being attempted to be made.

I have no need to update with "additional facts."

There is only ONE FACT of relevance to this diary.  The UNDISPUTED FACT that Boyd was shot - from that distance - and killed - by police.

Thats a fact.  And it is the only fact "implied" in the whole diary.

      Thank you.

and so you don't take my responses to be dismissive of your intent ...

... this was a THOUGHT EXPERIMENT.

The photo "essay" was not meant to be a "factual" series of photos. They are one photo - in three versions.  ON PURPOSE.

To ask yourself the question: if the shooters were different, would they be treated differently; if the target were different, would this be treated differently.

And obviously - in practice - we know this is the case.

If evidence existed of a group of armed civilians shooting and killing an individual - they'd be charged with murder and prosecuted.

If evidence existed of a group of armed civilians shooting and killing a police officer - they'd even more aggressively be charged with murder and prosecuted.

BUT - IN FACT - groups of police DID shoot a civilian and kill him.  AND there is NO CHARGE and NO PROSECUTION.

      That's the point!

Best to be candid either way about what you're doing and whether you're meeting conventional journalistic standards or utilizing interpretive art methods.

The original source of video and info is

which you did link in your petition, and at your previous diary about this but gave no attribution to that source at your vimeo-linked item, where you name the victim as "James Bryce" and the city as "Albequerque.

Your passion about this certainly is understandable and justified, even tho' your methods iffy, given the credentials your profile page states.

Thank you for explaining that you were in fact utilizing art to make your point and move readers to action.

    •  I thought the use was obvious (1+ / 0-)

I didn't think it needed explaining.

That is why I didn't try and add more about the story - hoping people who viewed the photo were familiar with it.

But that is why I added the video - for anyone who was not to at least put it into context.

I just wanted people to focus on the QUESTION raised in that particular "photo essay" so to speak.

Ooops.  Thanks for pointing out I used "James Bryce" (a famous political scientist of the 19th century) when I meant "James Boyd."  I  didn't catch that one.  Although I have - often - in typing his name unconsciously put Bryce before going back and correcting myself.

I'll go back and correct that one today. :)
