The analysis of readers includes the
number of recommendations awarded, the number of authors recommended,
the number and percent of their recommendations on the most recommended list (conversion)
and a ratio reflecting how much better the recommendations they made matched
the top hit list than would the same number of random picks.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.
Rescue this diary, and add a note:

Choose where to republish this diary. The diary will be added to the queue for that group. Publish it from the queue to make it appear.

Add a quick update to your diary without changing the diary itself:

decent wages don't eliminate jobs. Republicans eliminate jobs; and workers, and prospects, and then excuse it all and call for more austerity. there is no end to their ignorant, arrogant avarice. only political dinosaurs support their treachery.

  •  Thanks for doing this longer readers list again (7+ / 0-)

    jotter.

Do we have any statistics on the total number of recommends on the total site for this week compared to the previous week based on our experiment to see if my call for people to be more generous with recs could lead to a more supportive environment for emerging writers?

In terms of anecdotal data, I've witnessed a lot of enthusiasm from the totally new users commentrs and writers, and from catilinus' New uses groups, and thanks to nomandates, Dave from Northbridge, BeninSC, Sara R, Ek Hornbeck, and all the rotating hosts, and others at Top Comments, Overnight News Digest (OND), Kitchen Table Kibitizen, Bill from Portland, Night Howls, VentHowl, the Open Threads, and all the other places that have been extra friendly to our new and ... less new (old seems just wrong), readers and writers.

Without even doing statistics I can see the # of recommends in the above list seems a lot higher than the previous week.

As most of the rest of you probably followed after my big post last week, I back off some,  that we make a major campaign to raise the total number of recs  this last week based on feedback that my post recommending the campaign this last week using this list seemed to make it like a competition and what those of use who would like to see a more positive, generous, supportive, and fun writing culture here do not want this but rather are looking for more aggregate indicators.

In honesty, there are also those who like things exactly as they are. One person, whom I like and respect a great deal, told me "stop carping about the recs."

But, many of you went ahead on your own anyway and the "quite"results have been encouraging from what I've seen. My hope is we can continue this low key, under the radar approach until we can enlist the leadership of Markos, MB, and or some of the front-pagers. As I said in my post last week, of the FP MB, Laurence Lewis, and Dennis Oliver Valez have been generous to me with their recs, perhaps others too, I've never been entirely sure who are FPers or not. Sorry, if I left any of you off.

They were conspicuously, absent from the 350 recs on our call to actions though. Which I figured may not have been because it was not seen being on the REC board 3 days. So that's part of the reason I didn't follow up with daily cheer leading. If at any time there is a ground swell of support for this idea, I'm happy to help, but I do no want to "stir things up" if we've already achieved the "best of all possible worlds."

But, then I was e-chatting with a very highly respected environmentalist here, way ahead of me on the first page lists under People, about another matter and asked what I could have done to have won his rec on one of my recent environmental posts and he was totally surprised, and confessed he is very "old" and grew up on bulletin boards and never recs or tips anyone, out of habit, but probably should have, and was totally happy with my post.

I hadn't realized that he was one of the 80 posters out of 140 who last week who did not rec anyone  (i didn't and do not want to call out anyone.)  that my post last week noticed in general, and though he had selected mine out for some fault.

He immediately volunteered without prompting that he should be doing this, someone else had mentioned this to him and he turned out to be exceptionally friendly, instead of the .... whatever it was I had been expecting.

So, what I'm trying to say is right now my strategy is to keep a really low profile, supporting what all of you here seem to be doing. Especially, after I've seemed to annoy certain people. I've been here 9.5 years, and have nary ruffled a feather an just in the last week, 3 different people I really like have found me incredibly annoying, two for apparently unrelated reasons, one for "carping about recs."

A lot of really gratifying, and even gushing appreciation from new people about how friendly we, which means "you" all are. I didn't have the heart to tell the the whole story.

For example, just from memory it looks like BMScott handed out 200 extra recs, and our top 20 rec'cers all increased their recs by about 30% to 100%.

This is funny though, as these were not at all the folks we were wondering about, but it as been a fun week. Why does it always seems to be the people who need suggestions the least are the most responsive to them.  Thanks to everyone for playing along.

Yes, BMScott even though you were top of the list last week, we all felt the fact you only handed out 280 recs , or whatever was holding us back, and "harshing our mellow." Thanks for getting with the program and doing 430. Now please go eat, take a shower, get some sleep, and call your friends, they miss you, and wonder where you have been all week.
