I'm going to keep this short, but after watch the mobilization of troops, massing to attack the Russian barricades, I can't help but think they are playing into Putin's hands. Putin wants these targets to be attacked and I have to ask if the solution to the problem can be virtually non-violent? Just because someone has taken over a building and hung a foreign flag, must that violent action be met with more violence?
The Russian soldiers or Russian affiliated groups have already given the government a solution. You can see multiple sites in Eastern Ukraine that have been taken over, with an eye towards forcing the Ukrainian Government to Respond. But Barbed Wired and stacks of tires also serve to keep people in and prevent the inflow of supplies.
Checkpoints work in two ways, as the Soviets taught us in Berlin. Why not encircle the barricaded facilities, turn off the water, turn off the electricity and don't let anyone in? After a couple of days of no flushing toilets, no water and ultimately no food--the average person is going to give up and leave.
For those encircling the barricaded facilities, they should take no actions, unless someone is trying to break in. Anyone wanting to leave would have to leave their weapons behind and prove residency. No residency, then use that as an indictment of what Putin is doing and take those soldiers to the Hague to be tried before the world.
Call this a Quarantine ala Kennedy, but the Ukrainians would not be taking violent actions that would enable Putin to say that he was forced to take action to protect Russians in Ukraine.
No fortification can withstand a long term barricade of supplies. At some point, folks have to leave and 90 days of a stand still also serves to keep Russian troops on the border on a state of alert, which ultimately undermines their military effectiveness and there would be no justification for them to go in--because there would be no violence.
