March 2013 saw a 64% success rate for employees voting in favor of union representation. This number remains unchanged over last year. It also saw a drop in desertification. March 2013 saw a 50% desertification while this year saw a drop of 6% to only 44%. This represenates 58 new union workplaces and 4 former union workplaces decided to opt-out of a union workplace.
Some of the successful efforts were Lesley University, Airgas East, First Student, Washington Nationals Baseball Club, a Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Illinois, and a Pilot Flying J (the gas station chain owned by the family of Tennessee Anti-union Governor Bill Haslam).
Of course these votes do not represent a vote in favor of representation of all employees in their respective companies but often subsets or groupings of employees that do similar or the same work in a particular workplace.
For unions to gain ground and rebuild their numbers they will need to succeed at retailers including Wal-Mart and Target as well as medical field workers in hospitals and other healthcare facilities.
