It would be wise for Sam Brownback and the Kansas Legislature to remember that. By choosing to privatize Medicaid, the Governor has had a direct effect on the quality of life of thousands. Today we hear a personal story of a life that may have been saved, if only the ACA had been in place.

“My younger sister knew something was wrong with her but her husband had a stroke and he lost his job and eventually his health insurance. She worked but she got sick with cancer….she lost her job and her health insurance because she had to take too many days off with this cancer.” From the Topeka Capital Journal- CJOnline

Not for the squeamish. But it is a story Kansans need to get used to if our Governor is going to put a privatized pet project ahead of human life. This woman was unable to seek preventative care without insurance. So her sister tried to help.

“I had to leave soon but I left her $150 to go see a doctor. I found out later she had spent it on her husband’s medicine; and she called her pastor and asked him to have the church pray for them. Prayer was her last recourse.”

This is a true and personal story about life without insurance. Counting on the ER to save you is not Health Care. Many people in Kansas are in similar situations and will live shortened lives as the direct result of the Governor’s policies.

“Then in March, 2007 I got a call from her son. “Mother has terminal cancer. They give her three months….She didn’t have three months. She died eleven days later.

It is time to expand Medicaid in Kansas. While many Kansans turn to prayer in times of need, it should not be the 'last recourse'. It should come first; second should be going to the doctor. The last recourse should come years later. This brave author makes one point very clear-

"I sense that many of you would have prayed earnestly for her; but I also sense some of you who would pray for her would not have allowed her to have Medicaid…”

 Are you listening Governor?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
