A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Good morning Kogs and Kossacks in Dailykosland!

Merry Monday and welcome to the working week...

Have you ever seen a Broadway show?

I saw Purlie in the fall of 1970 with a social club from my aunt's church that used to arrange a Broadway bus trip every year as a fundraiser.  I didn't understand exactly that "Broadway show" meant something special as compared to other live performances I had seen at the local level, but I had already been bitten by the theatre bug and my mom guessed correctly I would be overjoyed.  I loved the atmospherics of it all: the buzz of the audience as the house slowly fills, the hush of anticipation just as the house lights go down, the bright sound of a live orchestra, people singing and dancing at a high level of professionalism.

I scared my mom half to death by separating myself from the group after the show was over and finding my way to the stage door.  The sun was setting, the bus was idling, the headcount was short by one, and my mother feared there were only two possibilities: terrible harm had come to me in the Big City, or I had done the equivalent of running away to join the circus.  I was entranced by the whole experience. Starstruck.  I had gotten the idea that Melba Moore was only a few years older than I was.  I just had to meet her.  It was disappointing to find out later that she had been almost twice my age at the time.

My aunt's church group made many similar trips, some more memorable than others.  This was before the period when producers always made sure something was running on Broadway that would encourage the black churches to send busloads of folks to Saturday matinees.  Five years later when our group went to "The Wiz" I was ho hum about the show itself, but over the moon about Stephanie Mills—finally a black girl my age WAS starring on Broadway!

For my 21st birthday my grandfather bought me tickets to A Chorus Line.  Those tickets cost only $17.50 apiece.  For orchestra seats.  On the aisle. About 15 rows back.  You can pay more than that to see a first run movie in NYC now, and the biggest hit shows charge a top ticket price twenty times that amount now.  Yes, you read that right. The premium ticket price for Wicked is $350.00, and Book of Mormon charges even more.  But $17.50 per ticket was an extravagance for 1978 when $4 an hour was the premium pay rate at the temp agency I worked for.  I've wondered whether my mom actually paid for those tickets and only told me the money was from my grandfather.  I know he loved me and wanted me to have a big 21st birthday, but $35 was a good chunk of his monthly pension check.

My best friend in the world has worked in the management and production side of Broadway for decades, and has had incredible good judgment about choosing shows to work on that turn out to be big hits.  Right now she is working on Once, winner of eight Tony Awards in 2012 including Best Musical, and still playing to packed houses in 2014.

I've seen several shows on Broadway, as well as live theatrical productions in DC, London, and Boston, and almost all of those tickets have been gifts from her.  She can get tickets to almost anything, and has been ridiculously generous in treating me.

I saw the prices on the tickets for Angels in America, Chicago, Othello, Guys and Dolls, A Steady Rain and others. I had no idea that she was actually paying those prices!  For years I thought she was getting comps!  I was absolutely horrified when I discovered she was shelling out her own money for these tickets.

But the extravagant cost of the ticket is not the only gift:  it is having the connections to get good seats to a hit show that are not available to the general public.  One of the few areas of genuine privilege in my life.  I savor it deeply.

All this brings me to the SUPERLATIVE production she treated me to on Friday...

All the Way,  starring Bryan Cranston in his Broadway debut, is about the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and Cranston completely inhabits the role of President Johnson:  his political strengths and personal weaknesses; his style of making promises and/or breaking off negotiations whenever the time seems right; his knowing how to threaten and how to cajole, sometimes with the same person within the same meeting.

Magnificent does not begin to describe HOW GOOD THIS SHOW IS.  Cranston is stunning as LBJ, and the supporting cast does not have a single false note in it.  I don;t have my Playbill handy to credit people by name, but other standout performers include the actors portraying George Wallace, Martin Luther King, Jr., Lady Bird Johnson, J. Edgar Hoover, Dave Dennis... I'm leaving a lot of people out.  They were all fabulous.  It is a deeply satisfying nostalgia exercise for people who have some personal memory of what politics was like in 1964, and it is an eye-opening education for people who think there is some nobler, principled way to make political sausage.

I'm not good at writing reviews so all I have are clichés:  I laughed, I cried, it was (way) better than Cats.  Run, don't walk to see this before the limited engagement ends.  Fill in your own favorite overused theatre critic chestnut here.  Astonishingly, it was not sold out the night I saw it.  Folks who do not thrill to the inherent drama of wheeling and dealing to get a bill through Congress will say "nothing happens" because the inside baseball and the intertwined human relationships are the whole plot line.  But for political junkies, this is as good as Broadway gets.  Get tickets any way you can.  Go go go go go!

If you are fascinated by the behind the scenes maneuvering that is the nitty-gritty side of politics, All The Way is a don't miss can't miss production.

Maybe kogs in the area should do a group trip???

DC Kossacks Inaugural Picnic Meet-up: Splendor On The Grass

by NinthElegyfor DC Kossacks

NinthElegy held her inaugural meet-up for the new DC Kossacks on Saturday, April 19th. She packed her tony bamboo picnic hamper with a healthy salad and artisan triple-chocolate cupcakes garnished with Eastern Redbud blossoms from her neighborhood tree. Such lovely details to reward her attendees. The timing was perfect for a picnic among the cherry blossoms on the mall.

Baja Arizona Kossacks Meet-Up Liveblog

by Azazellofor Baja Arizona Kossacks

The Baja Kossacks just had their 4th Annual Picnic at the home of Mr. and Mrs. sneakers563. The group is shepherded by Azazello, an official member of DKos since 2009. From his diary and about his state:

More and better Democrats is always a popular subject for debate here in Baja AZ, especially in an election year. Against the charge that Arizona is an incurably red state I often point out that 5 of our 9 US Reps are Democrats. This is true but it doesn't tell the whole story. While we in Tucson are justifiably proud of Raúl Grijalva (Wikipedia HERE) whose first elected office was board member for Tucson Unified School District #1, most of Tucson and all of Cochise County are now represented by Ron Barber (Wikipedia HERE) who is a very Blue Dog indeed. For an example of this Blue Doggedness see this article at Alternet ☛ 5 Million Dirty Reasons for Record Deportations.

He's on top of it and thanks to him for gathering Kossacks together to become stronger.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
