Today, May 1st - International Workers' Day, is a holiday in Turkey. Traditionally there are marches, and sometimes protests and demonstrations, every May 1st and the traditional center for these is Taksim Square and Gezi Park.
This year the government banned almost all marches and protests, especially in Taksim Square and Gezi Park, and 19,000 police officers and 50 water cannon vehicles were deployed in the Taksim Square area today completely closing off all areas for several kilometers around the square.
In spite of the government's bans there were protests in several cities today and strong police measures in response.
