It is being reported based on a Rupert Murdoch owned NY Post report that Donald Sterling has been battling prostate cancer for some time.

Okay, a Murdoch paper, not a pristine or credible source for reportage.  But let's go with the sentiment of the Clippers team initial responses, from the ESPN article:

Blake Griffin, speaking after the Clippers' 100-99, Game 6 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night, said he was unaware of Sterling's cancer.

"If that is true, my thoughts and prayers are with him," Griffin said. "Nobody deserves to go through something like that."

Chris Paul, who also said he hadn't heard about the cancer, called it "truly unfortunate," while coach Doc Rivers said he didn't know about it and that he hoped it wasn't true.

The NYP article has interesting tidbits, though each is unattributed for the record or ex parte to the situation.

It does occur to me though that a PR firm could be brought on-board to disseminate a sympathy ploy that, when challenged, can take shelter behind HIPAA protections.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  Totally Irrelevant and a distraction. (10+ / 0-)

This is simply an attempt to distract and gain sympathy for a rather nasty old man. The diagnosis apparently was some years ago and invoking the C-word is disgraceful.

As I point out in a rather long comment elsewhere, most elderly men with untreated prostate cancer die of other conditions unless it is a rarer aggressive form (which would have killed him by now!)

He deserves absolutely no sympathy whatsoever and this blatant attempt to distract from his N-word should be exposed for what it is.

it took 5 months from discovery to his death and it was a very unpleasant way to die.

there are two broad types of prostate cancer. In younger men in particular it tends to be aggressive and quickly fatal. In older men especially it is very slow developing and the treatments are worse than the disease. I am sorry your father appears to have had the former variant.

In this case I gather his diagnosis was a couple of years ago which points to the more benign variant that in many counties is not treated because, as I point out, other diseases of the elderly tend to result in death rather than the cancer.

Having said that, one side effect of both the cancer and the treatments is erectile disfunction which might go some way to account for his swapping his wife for a younger model (about 40 years younger than him IIRC) and then ending that relationship.

in the first place?  Billionaires are able to shield their personal lives in ways we can only dream of.  If Sterling had not released this information himself for his own purposes, I would expect a phalanx of lawyers to be tracking down the leak.

I must confess the first thought that went through my mind was why did an 80 year old prostate cancer victim need a high end, high maintenance girlfriend over 50 years his junior?

But I have to wonder about the timing.  Letting word of it leak now after he'd kept it private so long only leads me to believe it's to garner sympathy.  Sorry Donald, you still deserve to lose your team.
