Several people have posted diaries about Elizabeth Warren’s new book A Fighting Chance. While those diaries provided reviews and highlights of the book and some poignant anecdotes from her time in the political fray, I did not see a summary of Sen. Warren’s key message from the book.
Here is a simple summary of the key message as I absorbed it from the book. The summary is in my words, not those of Sen. Warren, so any mistakes are mine.
The system is rigged. It is rigged to favor rich and powerful businesses and people and to ignore any consequences to small businesses and ordinary people. All three branches of the federal government have helped rig the system to favor the rich and powerful, and have forgotten their mandate to serve all the people.
But the system was not always rigged against ordinary people and their families, and it need not be rigged that way in the future. We can return to a system that serves all the people and all the businesses, not just the rich and powerful. A system that levels the playing field and gives all our children a fighting chance at success.
Elizabeth Warren and the people of Massachusetts have shown us the way. We will have to fight hard to unrig the system, but we can win if we don’t give up.
