GUS (Gave Up Smoking) is a community support series for Kossacks in the midst of quitting smoking. Any supportive comments, suggestions or positive distractions are appreciated. We avoid discussion of political issues. If you are quitting or even thinking about quitting, please -- join us! You can add GUS to your stream by clicking on the ♥ next to the GUS tag. The GUS Library at dKosopedia is organically evolving, and stocked with free-range information, quit-smoking links, and helpful GUS writing tips.
"A message to all quitters: you don't have to avoid GUS if your latest attempt to quit didn't work out. We won't give you a bad time and we consider the attempted quits as practice for the real quit." (h/t to FG)

"It is the night,
my body's weak,
I'm on the run,
no time to sleep,
I've got to ride,
ride like the wind,
to be free again,
and I've got such a long way to go,
to make it to the border of Mexico,
so I ride, like the wind,
ride like the wind"

Such a great song, and one that's gotten stuck inside my head of late (from the 12/79 self titled release) I've constructed my own fantasy to go along with it, one that has me in a daytime setting rather than night, on a warm Mexican beach, ignoring the whole gunning, killing and escaped fugitive aspects, and going with a ride that's two wheeled and self propelled.

These maps are fantasies too, in the sense that I've never actually been to Mexico or South America, but the mileage is real and represents my first and second years of nearly daily bike riding. I'm truly pleased with myself for this, in spite of ache-y muscles and bones on any given day. As I said last week, it's tangible, concrete proof that one day at a time works, that persistence and perseverance prevails, and doing it brings exponential rewards. I've made improvements in myself as a human being, physically, mentally, emotionally & spiritually.

My fourth year of riding officially kicked off this week with a very early 20 mile ride on Sunday from 4A-5:30A and me wearing shorts for the first time in 2014. Venus very prominent as I watched the sunrise (I actually like the Axwell Re-mode version best. It closes out a US Ministry of Sound Annual and the connection between the dance floor and great work out music is clear). I've done several other night rides this year, for the first time since I was a kid, but I was wearing more clothing for them. Downloaded a star field map app for the phone. Even just a short distance away from town the night sky is nothing but stars. That's something else that I haven't really experienced since I was a kid. Riding at night adds another sense of adventure and excitement. Remember, I'm out there for leisure. To have fun. To explore. To grow. I wouldn't be doing it if I wasn't enjoying myself. The health benefits are a bonus.

The smell of sunscreen made me absolutely giddy on Monday afternoon for my first afternoon/evening ride wearing shorts this year, with temps in the upper 80's and a mostly sunny sky. 40 miles each on Monday and Tuesday. Had a bald eagle fly past when I was out on Levee Rd. along the Mississippi. Watched the sun set both days. I went right back out Wednesday morning at 4A again and rode 20 more miles. Just laps around town here, but seeing the sun set and rise had me in a club mood. There will come a day when I watch the sun set and rise on a warm summer Ibiza night. Until then, maps? Of course :-) Pics? sure. I think a lot of people really don't understand how significant a rise the bluff is. You can see the city of Valmeyer's water tower on top in the distance. The new Valmeyer. The old one got washed away in the flood of '93.

So, perhaps obviously, I don't have all my data gathered to share year three yet again. I'm working on it, albeit slowly. Motivation has played a role. Most of my efforts over the past couple months have been directed at getting acquainted with a new work schedule and different routine. I worked overnights for almost 15 years and switching to 4P-1A is a big change for me. I think I have a reasonable sleep pattern worked out, and I have a couple opportunities each work day to get some riding in and get back to 200+ mile weeks. This week has gone well and I feel good about things. I'm off today and tomorrow and I've been to bed and rested and I'm here and ready to spend a little time with the GUS gang.

Have you had some experience with the effects of smoking, and want to write a GUS diary or host an open thread? Please sign up in the Butt Can (Tip Jar), and name the day and time that works for you (AM, PM, late-night, early-bird...) Regular diarists' names have been enhanced for your viewing pleasure. Click on the link to learn how to write a GUS diary the easy way. It's really easy. Did I say it's really easy? It is. It's really. "Seriously, it doesn't have to include specific elements or require all sorts of fabulous diary formatting skills. The regulars will make sure stuff gets carried over from diary to diary, so if you want to just tell your story and host for a few hours, that's cool too." (h/t Vctnld)

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.

(The diary will be removed from the site and returned to your drafts for further editing.)
(The diary will be removed.)
Are you sure you want to save these changes to the published diary?
