A funny thing happened on the way to Benghazi.  Republicans and Fox News forgot to check on who got killed, where they got killed, what day they got killed, and who they worked for.

I just can't wait for the Republican Trey Gowdy's new Super-Duper, "Non-Partisan", Blue Ribbon Panel with Whipped Cream, Sprinkles and a Cherry on Top to subpoena 4 Star and CIA Director, General David Petraus.  Is Fox New's New Enemy #1 going to be America's favorite 4 Star General & CIA Head David Petraus?

Why?

Because two of the four people killed, Tyrone S. Woods and Glen Doherty, weren't really State Department employees, weren't killed in a State Dept. facility, and weren't killed at the same time as the State Dept. personnel.

According to sworn US Senate Testimony from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and 4 Star General and CIA Head David Petraeus, Mr. Woods and Mr. Doherty were CIA operatives, and were killed in a separate attack on a separate CIA facility, on the day following the attack on State Dept facilities on September 12, 2012.

And who did they work for?  One of America's most beloved Generals, 4 Star General General David Petraus, CIA Director from September 6, 2011 to November 9, 2012.  The attack on Benghazi's State Department Facility was on  was on September 11th, 2012, and the attack on Benghazi's CIA Facility was on the following day, September 12th.

I'd personally find it repugnant to question the integrity of General Petraeus, whose distinguished career included Commanding US Forces in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and many other distinguished positions.

I can only wonder how many active duty US Military and retired US Military personnel are now unknowingly slandering General Petraeus each and every time they accuse Hillary Clinton of semi-treasonous actions in Benghazi.   As usual, Fox News didn't make the effort to find out what happened, and failed to mention General Petraeus's involvement in Benghazi.

Is this really a path that the Republican Party and their mouthpiece Fox News wants to go down?  Did they even think about it before they revived this controversy?

Are Fox News and Republicans going to accuse General Petraeus of being a liar?  Will they accuse General Petraeus of poor judgement and leadership?  Will they accuse General Petraeus of not warning his subordinates in the CIA of an impending attack after the State Department facility was attacked on the previous day?  Will they ask General Petraeus why the CIA, America's premier intelligence gathering agency, didn't do more to warn the State Department of an impending attack?  Will they ask General Petraeus why he didn't stand along with Hillary Clinton when the bodies of the fallen were returned to the US?

Will they ask why General Petraeus didn't ask for more funds to beef up security at his facilities like Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did?  Will they ask why General Petraeus resigned from his position as head of the CIA shortly after the attack?

Will Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham now start referring to General Petraeus as a "scumbag", a term he used publically last week to attack President Obama for his "coverup"?  Will Fox News ask Senator Graham if he and Senator McCain made a mistake when they skipped the classified briefing on Benghazi that they insisted on, to hold a slanderous Press Conference?  What new whopper of a story will Fox News invent to try to weasel out of this one?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Not liking what the military does doesn't mean you should dissrespect those in the military.  I didn't support the war in either IRAQ or Afghanistan, but I don't slander our troops or their Generals.  Real adults in real positions of authority have to do what their higher up say.  In the military this includes everyone from privates to generals.  You're only pretending to be a progressive if you can't recognize the accomplishments and integrity of others.

      •  no, I have no respect for that pussy hound (9+ / 0-)

he had no respect for his office either, so I guess the respect thing is kind of bullshit. Next question?

"Disrespecting" those in the military? You mean generals like Petraeus? Who lives like a little lord Fauntleroy like all the other general officers, http://www.salon.com/... and http://www.washingtonpost.com/... with every kind of privilege and "prestige" completely unwarranted by any proof of military (as in actual effective warfighting, as opposed to Playing the Pentagon Game and self-promotion) skill? Go google "Petraeus surge" and add "Tillman" and see what you get. Stuff like this: http://www.emptywheel.net/...

There are reasons why people started rendering his name "Betray-us," as a busy member of the military elite that's eating us ordinary people out of house and home. "Reesect" these people who have created and are busily fertilizing a Beast that can't even "win" a war, when they gin one up? Who can't even win fucking rigged war games? http://fabiusmaximus.com/... "Reespect" these people, whose function is mostly to strip the nation of wealth and turn it into idiotic Cold War military hardware, picking stupid fights all over the planet, linking arms with the CIA (when it suits) to oppress people all over the place including here at home?

What are we, a bunch of acolytes who are supposed to kiss the ring and robes of these fucking high priests of Brobdingnagian incompetent bureaucracy and the bleeding heart of the military-industrial leech that is suckiing our life out? Respect, my ass. No more respect is due them than was due Westmoreland and the other weasels who fucked the country over during "my" little $4 trillion war.

none of this is even mentioned at the hearings.

If they can still claim that the IRS was targeting only conservative organizations, forgetting that 2 of the people killed were CIA, they were killed on the following day, and Petraeus was in charge will be easy to forget/overlook.

This isn't about finding out what is going on.  The guy in charge  of the committee was quoted refering to this as a trial:

Asked by MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough about the possibility that his panel’s work would continue into the 2016 election campaign, Gowdy replied that “if an administration is slow-walking document production, I can’t end a trial simply because the defense won’t cooperate.”

They want to know if Petraeus was ordered by the President to write those phony talking points for Susan Rice -- specifically the bullshit one about a demonstration over a video (which never happened), when the CIA knew exactly what was going on, as they were under coordinated mortar attack.

That's as far as they dare go.

to know what their opinions are of the once-vaunted, but now [post affair] damaged goods, General David Petraeus these days. But if I had to guess I'd say Fox and the GOP would throw Petraeus under the bus in a heartbeat if it meant taking Hillary with him.

I do believe the CIA annex was undercover at the time of the attacks so while Petraeus probably had more insight into the potential for attacks than the State Dept did -- considering the fact that the annex was undercover -- Petraeus probably avoided normal channels for reporting threat level potentials for both the annex and the consulate where Stevens and the others were killed.

It probably doesn't matter much anyway. Republicans aren't looking for the truth -- only to marginalize Obama -- and ruin Clinton's chances in 2016.

  •  You may find it repugnant (8+ / 0-)

to question his integrity, but as for me, I'll consider him pretty much absent that quality until he reveals the citation for that Bronze Star with a "V" device that he apparently started wearing when he was a Lieutenant General. Strange that we don't hear the story of how a two-star acted with such gallantry in the face of enemy fire that the Army should see fit to award him our nation's fourth-highest individual military honor, complete with a device denoting specific acts of battlefield valor.

In other words, you don't need to go to Fox News and Republicans to find people who will accuse General Petraeus of being a liar; in fact, I'll do so right here and now.

A big fat NO.  They will completely ignore Petraeus in these hearings.

I know because every time I mention it to some wingnut on a blog (usually Politico blog), they completely ignore it.  They have no idea how to deal with the fact that one of their heroes is smack dab in the middle of this.

It will be up to the Democrats to make this a focal point.  And they should.  Not for partisan reasons, but mainly because how can you get to the bottom if you don't include Petraeus?  If the GOP subpoenas Secretary Clinton and not General Petraeus, Democrats should kick up dust and make such a stink that they have to.

  •  All of Benghazi is a botched CIA operation (0+ / 0-)

Ambassador Stevens was not meeting at an actual State Department facility--it was not even a remote outpost. He met with Turkish Consul General Ali Sait Akin.

The State Dept. angle and the "involvements" of both H. Clinton and J. Kerry were smoke-screen covers for a clandestine set-up that was totally created by all of the US intelligence services and then completely butchered.

Several rightwing whackjobz have "exposed" the "truth" of Benghazi--which oddly enough lays the entire operation on the desk of former director Gen. D. Petraeus.

Diana West(commie hunter extraordinaire) opines on her blog.

And a Canadian wingnut tracks the CIA connections as some very strange follow-on to the death of Vincent Foster back in the 90s.

Oddly, the House Republicans, especially Boehner, don't seem to be aware of the story lines developed by their very own media hacksters. Hunh?
