Short bit of news here from Denver.

Yet another of Clear Channel’s Liberal Talk stations is dropping the format.

“AM 760″ KKZN Thornton/Denver is next in line to shift to another Talk variation following similar moves in recent months at sister stations in Portland and Los Angeles. Morning host Gloria Neal posted on Facebook that she had been fired as the station would be changing formats. With Randi Rhodes ending her syndicated show next week the station is losing two of its shows.

Greg Foster, VP/Programming for Clear Channel Denver confirmed to the Denver Post that Neal was let go.

“I can confirm that Gloria Neal’s show is no longer on KKZN and she is no longer with our company. We will be announcing new programming for KKZN in the near future.”

Here's how the scam works.

Clear Channel wants to kill a progressive radio station, but oh, the ratings are too good, and just axing it would cause protests.

So they got rid of David Sirota a couple of years ago, and replaced him with Gloria Neal. Gloria means well, but she doesn't have nearly the talent of Sirota, or his predecessor Jay Marvin. So the morning show languishes, the ratings start to drop, and lo and behold, Clear Channel is so, so sorry, but they're converting the station to a new format.

Business talk. Excuse me while I puke.

Fuck you, Clear Channel.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I really do not think they want to kill a radio station that is providing profits. Am I missing something here?

You see his show making money lately in the boycott?

Is under contract for the next couple of years.  I really think AM radio is dying.

        •  Contracts have morality clauses. (6+ / 0-)

If a progressive host had done what Rush did to Sandra Fluke, they would have been fired, and had their contracts canceled in a heartbeat.

The whole Stop Rush campaign that got most of Rush's advertisers (except the penis pill pushers and survival seed shills) to flee in terror is why.

Clear Channel is bleeding money at an insane rate. The only reason they're still in business is because they've been getting cash transfusions from the Koch brothers & such.

They want to keep Rush, and they're willing to pay millions to keep their propaganda on the air.

Because that's what AM radio is now. Propaganda. There's no longer a functioning fair market there based on advertisers, ratings and listeners. For all intents and purposes, AM radio is a nationwide, 24/7 advertisement for the corporate-fascist power base.

You're missing something.  They took the progressive radio station in LA and turned it into KEIB for Rush Limbaugh.  Stephanie Miller had been #2 in her spot.  Now, even Rush is being beaten by college stations, Spanish language stations, and about 30 others.

Did you see Louie Gohmert accuse Comcast exec of keeping Glen Beck off cable because of politics?  It's just projection.  Clear Channel does this all the time.

There were all kinds of signs that Gloria was doing really well. She had folks calling in regularly from all over the country who found her and loved the show. Gloria was doing better with conservatives than anyone in the business. She has a great manner with her callers and constantly got kudos. Also was better prepared than any of her predecessors (including Sirota) with local professors or people knowledgeable about the subject/situation to give background and answer some of her questions.

Without seeing some real stats on her show, I don't believe they fired her for low numbers. Aside from winning the Colorado Broadcasters award for best talk show host her first year.

I liked Jay personally but he wasn't good on the political issues. Mario also disappeared without any apparent reason. I suspect he was bringing too many Hispanics to liberal talk radio.

Sirota on a local level was very different from when he filled in for a national program. He was little more than a shock jock. He always had to be the one to make a critical point. I hadn't  been listening to him for months when I learned he was gone. My impression was he had left to do a Con/Lib show with Heckuva job Brownie on a Con station here. Think it flopped.

Damn, Gloria was a treat. I wondered why they are rebroadcasting Randi's shows in the am slot.

The Washington Times, for example, has never turned a profit in its entire existence.

For them controlling the dialogue is profit enough in itself.

They're playing a very long game here.

If the pilot's good, see, I mean if he's reeeally sharp, he can barrel that baby in so low... oh you oughta see it sometime. It's a sight. A big plane like a '52... varrrooom! Its jet exhaust... frying chickens in the barnyard!

  •  The radio biz is troubled (0+ / 0-)

To say the least.  If you want liberal talk, Sirius XM has a few stations.  Otherwise,  you're gonna have to read.  Right wing radio is in decline too but it has farther to fall.

I miss Jay Marvin, used to listen to him on KHOW and WLS.

is Ed Schultz, and he is just barely. Sirota always was a joke, Gloria was just not very informed on anything, out of her league,  and Rhodes is a screamer.

The only thing I used to like was after primaries listening to Sirota. I know it's wrong but it's the same sick enjoyment I get from listening to Rush when he's really hurt and dispirited.

I listen to music or soccer mom NPR.
