Wall Street backed candidate, Treasurer Gina Raimondo (D)
Received this e-mail from Providence Mayor Angel Taveras' (D. RI) gubernatorial campaign today:
I'm proud of my record as Mayor, which includes turning a $110 million deficit into a $1.6 million surplus for our city, investing $40 million in improving our roads, beginning to repair our schools and having the most diverse police and fire academies in the city's history.
As governor, I want to continue to improve Rhode Island's infrastructure by reinvesting $800 million in crumbling roads, bridges and schools. I will focus on investments in infrastructure and workforce training to help get people back to work. And I want to provide Pre-K education for all of the state's 4-year-olds.
Running against my record, my opponent has had to resort to making false claims. I hope you'll join me today in calling such behavior unacceptable for anyone hoping to be the next leader of our great state.

It's a bad sign when a candidate starts distorting facts and making false claims. But that's just what my opponent did when she talked about my record on taxes in Providence. Treasurer Raimondo claimed that I raised taxes 27% in Providence. PolitiFact Rhode Island ruled Treasurer Raimondo's claim "Pants on Fire."
I need your help to make sure that her false statements don't stand. This is a clear example the Treasurer will say anything to get elected - she knows that she needs to convince people that Providence isn't on the path to recovery.
And this isn't the first time she's resorted to false statements about my record: on WPRI 12's Newsmakers, Treasurer Raimondo had to correct herself and admit that crime was down in Providence and not up as she had previously claimed on the radio.
Unless we take a stand, I expect that the Treasurer will continue to make false statements about my record. Will you stand with me against my opponent's false statements? Together, we need to demand the truth -- the people of Rhode Island deserve it.

By the way, here's a great reason why I'm backing Taveras and why you should too:

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras joined with Rhode Island State Representative Art Handy on Tuesday to introduce his plan to make Rhode Island America’s leader in environmental stewardship as the state’s next Governor.
The announcement took place during a green infrastructure demonstration event being held by the Environmental Justice League of Rhode Island and Groundwork Providence for Earth Day.
The plan, “Preserving Rhode Island,” builds on programs that Taveras has undertaken as Mayor of Providence and addresses issues such as climate change, reducing Rhode Island’s carbon footprint and waste management on a statewide level.
The seven point plan includes:
Achieve 40% renewables by 2030. Reduce Rhode Island’s reliance on fossil fuels by investing in renewable sources of energy.
Ensure access to fresh, local, affordable food. Encourage development of community gardens and urban farms, and foster local agriculture development through state procurement policies.
Expand Green & Healthy Homes Initiative. Ensure housing stock is energy efficient, safe and healthy.
Support local sustainability efforts. Develop strategies for municipalities to save tax dollars and reduce carbon footprint through investments in energy efficiency.
Enact a comprehensive organic waste master plan. Create Rhode Island’s first coordinated plan to divert food and organic waste to composting operations.
Extend the life of the Central Landfill. Cultivate and recruit recycling businesses to help reduce waste and turn recyclable goods in new products.
Reduce the state’s carbon footprint and prepare for climate change. Direct state agencies to work together to develop a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 85% below 1990 levels by 2050. - Go Local Providence, 4/22/14
