remembrance's quilt
For some years now, my sister and I have been making community quilts here on Daily Kos. The quilt project is an open invitation to community members to say kind and loving things to friends who are facing life challenges such as illness or loss. We transcribe their words and work them into something tangible, a colorful quilt. People truly enjoy being able to support their friends in this manner -- and some people come to quilt diaries just to cry tears of love. There is a very good feeling to the whole process. The project has become popular enough to provide a living for we sisters in a difficult economy, too -- it has become a small business, for which we are most grateful.
Last year, at NN13, there was a celebration of the body of work we have done. Smileycreek and navajo organized a flash mob of quilt recipients with their quilts -- and linkage did video interviews with several of them.
The first interview has been edited and put onto YouTube. Ann and I were blown away and so deeply touched by remembrance's kind words and the beautiful way in which linkage put the film together. You know, when we are making the quilts, we are very tuned into the person receiving the quilt and to the people leaving messages -- but once we finish the blanket it leaves our sphere and we don't always know how people are affected by the work. This film was a revelation to us and we are deeply thankful for it.
We'd love to know what you think -- and if you are so moved, please do share it with your friends. You can find more about the Community Quilt Project at our website, also kindly constructed by linkage. Namaste.
Thank you, remembrance and linkage!
