Itzl Alerting

As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here.  We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries.  Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group!  Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!
Ok,  we do have a diary schedule. But, when you are ready to write that diary, either post in thread or send FloridaSNMOM a Kosmail with the date. If you need someone to fill in, ditto. FloridaSNMOM is here on and off through the day usually from around 9:30 or 10 am eastern to around 11 pm eastern.
Monday: BadKitties
Tuesday: bigjacbigjacbigjac
Wednesday: Caedy
Thursday: Art ah zen
Friday: FloridaSNMOM
Saturday:broths
Sunday: loggersbrat

This is my first shot at a diary for this group.  Of course, the biggest thing I really need to do is get it posted and everyone else does the work by checking in.  Thank you for the chance to try my hand at this.

In my spare time, I spend some time drawing in a style referred to as z.i.a. or zen inspired art.  It is based on the formal style called "zentangle", a copyrighted style owned and defined by Rick and Maria at rickandmaria@zentangle.com.  You can read their original ideas and the parameters of their art form.  I am not trained by them, and indeed, I am not trained at all.  It seems to me that doodling is at the root of the art form and most of us are competent to doodle without too much fanfare.  The wonderful information, patterns, clubs/groups, and images are so easy to find online or at your local art class.  If you are interested, I urge you to investigate further.

But, for my purposes here, I have created a little 2 1/2 minute video on an online site called Animoto.  They provide program formats, music, and the ability to make fun little videos using photos. Here, I scanned each step of the process to make one of these drawings.  It is done with Prismacolor markers of varying nib widths in black ink on 140lb cold pressed watercolor paper.  The music is not what I might have chosen but it was royalty free so I won't bag on it.

I post these, and other things I make, at the flickr page linked at the end of the video.  My primary purpose is to offer them for donations that I send to the Los Angeles Food Bank.  I don't make much at it; the art form is odd and I may not be the best at it, but I did quite well with the bookmarks for awhile.

I hope you take the time to enjoy this even though it may be 2 1/2 minutes of your life you will never get back.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

on the odd occasion that i fly.  i hate to fly these days so i take the train a bit.  its a great way to see the country that in most cases is not what you would travel to see.  the train runs through the worse part of town but the countryside is beautiful if you have the time to spend.

the first time i took a train, i asked my friend who travels that way all the time, "what is security like?"  she said "well, you get on the train with your luggage and sit down.  the terrorist gets on the train with his luggage and sits down.  the train leaves the station."  it was just like that except there were no terrorists, just old folks, a few latino kids and an amish family with beautifully hand made clothes. we were all in coach, sleeping sitting up.  one of these days i will get a sleeper car and ride in style, 1890 style!

When you live in NYC, they're the best way to go anywhere between Boston & D.C.

For cross-country travel, unfortunately, you need a LOT of time, and it's expensive, too. I feel sorry for Amtrak: somewhere around the 1970s, Congress seemed determined to try to kill it in so many different ways.

But if you're in the NE Corridor, it's the best way to go, absolutely.

  •  g'day all; question for the gang: does anyone (9+ / 0-)

have any information about the Emory Gifted and Talented program for school children.  My daughter is getting cold feet, having read mixed reviews about the program.  She is hesitating as it is a large sum of money and she has second thoughts.  Anyone have any first hand experience.

Got into a long thread yesterday arguing with a newbie.  He took umbrage over my observation that he may be in for a rough ride here.  I do hope he will stick around long enough to pick up some new ideas.
Here is a part of his original post:

"And I suppose taking every ones money to pay for welfare for those that come here illegally... those that live off the dole because they can...giving Medicare to people who are not citizens....Yeah I suppose that is okay. Isn't it.  I suppose you will defend that some how and justify it."

"of the Super Liberals especially the rich want clean air... Ah yup... But they own jets & gas guzzling Bentleys.  Yet they rant how Americans are wasteful and need to be guided and if a Compant is even remotely close to a perceived no no line ...a liberal is taking it to court."

Guy does appear to be intelligent if aggrieved, based on his later quotes.  Just appears he is listening to the wrong folks

great umbrage that illegal immigrants today receive all this assistance from various government agencies when his family migrated here from 1900 to 1950 and immediately began to work and never took a penny from welfare.

So many things wrong with that narrative that I hardly know where to begin with him.  However, like the freshman at Princeton who wrote that essay on "white privilege", the problem is that he thinks his opinions are all factually based.
"My family most... are all immigrants.  They came to this Country with what they had and WORKED. Worked to cut a piece of the American dream.

It was not given to them.  They were not looking for hand outs...Of course there were none."

"My ancestors came here beginning in early 1900s and continued thru 1955.

There still at that time was no federal assistance to illegals nor legal immigrants. They were on their own "

I dated a few right-wingers in my time and was married to one. I've done my time trying to "bring reason" or "be open-minded and tolerant of differences" in the course of close relationships, or for that matter, any relationships. Nothing but aggravation and a huge waste of time! The two-by-four that's going to knock sense in any of those heads is going to come from another source than me! I'm not a debater and at this point don't want to be. There are enough other sources of stress in my life. Around 'winger relatives, I just try to keep my mouth shut and get away as quickly as I can.

What I want to know is, who's going to pay for these crimes against humanity that those b@st@rds are perpetrating against the rest of us?

And for being willing to give it a try.  Your first effort is a good one.  I like the art and the video shows it off well.  It looks a bit more complicated than doodling, however.  :-)

The week's first funeral went well and tomorrow's looks to be similar.  Though they haven't picked the music yet, they have promised that it's nothing I don't normally play on the weekends.  If the little choir sings as well as they did yesterday, I'll be very happy.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention that it was a mortuary that we don't usually see in our church so they paid me directly, rather than through the church.  There was an envelope on the bench when I arrived yesterday!  That always makes me happy.  Probably won't be so lucky today....

Still chilly here, but that's better than too hot.  The river continues to be high, about a foot above flood stage.  There is still water in low end of the park, with ducks and geese swimming around in it.  It's not quite deep enough for the pelicans.  They're still out on the river side of the fence.  If there is no more rain upstream, it should recede soon.

the funeral i went to on tuesday was very lovely and different from masses i have heard for the dead before.  the stained glass and paintings in the church were very much in the cubist style, beautiful and a little haunting with sparse bodied people.  the priest had a great singing voice too.  he kept it short at the graveside, which was a good thing since it was 94 degrees.

how nice to get a little pay envie unexpectedly. i  mentioned that i will be performing marriages at city hall soon and have been teasing with my daughter that they may want to pay me with chickens, if i get paid at all.  i have not been to orientation yet, so have no idea what to expect.  i am looking forward to it.

ducks, geese, pelicans, high water, your place sounds wonderful!  have a good day, hope your little choir sings like the norman chubby knuckle choir and does everyone proud.

which is a welcome thing.  Even with the flood, we're pretty dry here - for Iowa, at least.

How interesting that you'll be performing weddings!  You have to admire the optimism of people who want to commit themselves to each other these days.  It's so easy to live together or to get divorced at the first sign of disagreement.  I look at some of the children* getting married and at all the expense of the whole shindig and wonder if/how they will manage.

        * For a long time, I was younger than most of the couple whose weddings I played for.  I began doing weddings when I was 14.  Now that I'm old, they all look like children to me.  :-)

forward to marrying folks.  last september my brother in law asked me to perform the ceremony for he and his new husband.  they told me how to sign up at city hall and it was great fun.  at the orientation, i took info about the volunteer program and applied in november.  they just got to me!  i have orientation next week although i just got a call that i need to interview for a background check.  i am a little old lady with little to hide so i am not concerned about it.

the state of young love is frequently a little mismanaged but i too share the wonder that they are willing to jump into it.  i don't expect to see high expense weddings at city hall, but you never know.

i do a bit of volunteer work but i think this will be the most joyful help i have done yet.  i have high hopes!  i will let you know how it goes.

  •  Dog and Cat food recall (6+ / 0-)

Thanks Susan Thixton at Truth About Pet Food.

Listeria monocytognes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-¬term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

However, healthy cats and dogs rarely become sick from Listeria. Animals ill with Listeria will display symptoms similar to the ones listed above for humans. People who have concerns about whether their pet has Listeria should contact their veterinarian.

The recalled product was distributed nationwide to distributors, retail stores, internet retailers and directly to consumers. The Prodeuct can be identified by the batch ID code (best used by date) printed on the side of the plastic tube or on the label on the box.

The recalled products are as follows:

    1) These products are being recalled because they many have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Product: Raw Food Diet Bravo! Beef Blend for Dogs and Cats (Made in New Zealand)

Best Used by Dates: 1/07/16 and 2/11/16

    2) These products are being recalled out of an abundance of caution because while they did not test positive for pathogens, they were manufactured in the same manufacturing facility or on the same day as products that did test positive.

Product: Raw Food Diet Bravo! Lamb Blend for Dogs and Cats (Made in New Zealand)

This voluntary recall has been issued because the FDA has reported an independent lab detected the bacteria in a sample during a recent review. The company has received a limited number of reports of dogs experiencing nausea and diarrhea that may be associated with these specific products. The company has received no reports of human illness as a result of these products.

Bravo discontinued all manufacturing in New Zealand on October 10, 2013. Bravo will immediately start working with distributors and retailers to properly dispose of any affected product left on freezer shelves. The company will also be announcing the recall to pet owners to ensure they dispose of any affected product that has been purchased.

thank you for the recall info.  it is terrifying how many times pet food is adulterated and recalled.  i am so glad that i had to cook rubi's food from the beginning and am used to it.  i know what she gets, i know what she needs, and i know what she likes.  i usually make my own dried chicken chewies since so many are made in china with poison.  last it has been so hot here that i did not want to have to oven running for hours, even at low temp, so i bought some chicken strips that are sourced and made in colorado.  they are safe but when i gave the first one to rubi, she looked offended.  she dropped it on the floor, nudged it with her paw, and looked at me like "WTF mama?"  it was funny, but she finally deigned to eat it.

      have a good day.

  •  Good morning. (5+ / 0-)

I'm sorry for all of you in the heat zone.   It's 40 degrees with 25 mph wind and rain here.   Maybe it'll go up to 50.  Maybe.   It's really miserable right now.

That is so cool art ah zen!   I love it.   I'm a bead weaver who's been on a two year leave of absence from creative endeavors, but I feel the creative juices stirring again.   I just have to find out what I want to do.   Great diary.

We have to go bring our r.v. into where we bought it to have something repaired.  Then we're going to Costco.

    Have a good day.

thank you for the kind compliments about my work.  i hope you find your muse and can get back to art.  my muse takes trips to las vegas i think.  she comes home broke, tired, and in need of rehab.  then i learn a new craft or art.  i have never had to tiny skill or patience for beading so i applaud you.  now get back to work!

have a good day.  costco is like a field trip for me, such fun!

Great diary, art ah zen! Always fun to learn about something new!!

It's warming up. Plants seem to have mostly survived 8" of snow. Ugh. 80's this weekend. Then we head to Phoenix next weekend. DH loves heat. I don't. Bleah.

    Have a good one, everybody!

The art is beautiful and the video presents it so well. I love it. I think it's "advanced doodling," though :)

The promised rain finally arrived here in the Hudson Valley. It's off and on and never very heavy. The spring flowers and trees look wonderful against all the gray.

    Thanks again, art ah zen.

Hope everyone has a good day.

thank you for your words of praise.  they are so welcomed here.  i was pleased with how the video came out considering i knew nothing about making it.  the web site is very user friendly.  now that i have signed up for a year, i will have to find ways of using it.

please send me some of your rain.  boy, do we need it here.  it is so hot today that i will send my housekeeper home early.  its too hot to clean and you can't open the house up.  so i'll pay her and let her go back home to long beach where it is cooler.

      have a good day!

I know how badly it's needed where you are.

It's also only 63 here, and not supposed to go higher than about 70 for the next few days. Now that I've made you envious :), I'll say that I usually prefer high 70s, even 80, but I know there'll come a time this summer when it's over 90, no breeze, high humidity, and I'll pine for days like this!

and the late start to spring has condensed tractor buying into May.  It usually starts in Mid-March.  Rain all day tomorrow so I think I can stay home and catch up on a few things.

I am sorry to be so late to the party!

I love your diary art ah zen, and am so thankful you are writing for us.  ♥

  •  I couldn't watch the animoto video (0+ / 0-)

because it requires a newer version of Flash than my old machine, with missing .dll files, can run. But I did check out the Flickr page and enjoyed that very much. Some of that stuff would appeal to a "steampunk" sensibility, and I have some friends who would like that very much, I think.

Great first diary! Thanks for doing it, and taking that on as a regular commitment.

What I want to know is, who's going to pay for these crimes against humanity that those b@st@rds are perpetrating against the rest of us?

thank you so much for your extra effort to see my art since you couldn't watch the video and your kind words.  you did see the pictures anyway on the flickr page and you didn't have to listen to the silly music!  there is always a silver lining.  i do indeed think that some of my work incorporates the steampunk style.  i was quite taken with it for awhile and will get back to it when the current fad passes.  i am quilting right now and sculpting sea mammals.  i have what i call "craft a.d.d." syndrome.
