Look, in 50-100 years there will be a crisis, when seas raise to a point that cannot be ignored in some major cities.  At that point, the electorate will turn to one of the political parties to get something done.

I am remembering Winston Churchill, who wrote about and campaigned about how dangerous Hilter and the Nazis were to England, and was ignored in the 1930s up until the war broke out.  When the British were defeated and had to evacuate at Dunkirk, the King turned to Churchill to lead the country.

Obama should start a set of measures - commission some studies, push a bill to build infrastructure that will be needed to build dikes quickly, etc.  The Republicans will howl like crazy, and be on the record for the next N years as opposing any climate accommodation measures.

When the crisis comes, the Democrats will be who the electorate turn to, which they should be, because Democrats believe in the people power organized by the government to solve major problems.

Time for some government action on the accommodation side...

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Never promote men who seek after a state-established religion; it is spiritual tyranny--the worst of despotism. It is turnpiking the way to heaven by human law, in order to establish ministerial gates to collect toll. John Leland

all around the coastline?  It'd be cheaper to relocate.  Because otherwise, in the long run, operation & maintenance costs will eat us alive.

Some critical or important facilities/areas may warrant protection.

There are a lot of folks in Holland who are levee experts and they have already extended offers to come help the U.S. with design of levees to protect critical areas.  I don't know how far that effort has gotten, though.

They have many studies and long-term plans for sea-levels rising. But it's an -- er -- uphill battle.

I don't see levees winning out against another 10' of water, in the long run.

I suppose if one built fields of reinforced concrete bunkers, and covered them with topsoil...

for him to come out against building levees, at which point the GOP come out in favor (since they oppose everything he does), and then compromise with them by building the levees?

Or maybe he can gin up a scare of brown-skinned immigrants coming to the USA.... by BOAT!  And we need to build a giant wall to keep them out!

  •  Suggested Question For Climate Change Deniers (0+ / 0-)

So many governments in the US and around the world have budgeted money for the effects of climate change that are happening now and for the effects of climate change in the future. Should they just not do anything?

The Federal Reserve has the power to make large loans at low interest and no strings attached to large banks and financial institutions.  The power sprung forth from the Federal Reserve Act.  The Humphrey-Hawkins Full Employment and Balanced Growth Act mandated during economic downturns, that the President, the Federal reserve and private corporations work together to achieve full employment and growth.  If the Fed can loan money to private banks, why can not the Fed loan money to the Nation through its President for use in establishing a National Infrastructure Bank which would provide funds to federal departments, state and local to hire private corporations to rebuild America.  The funds could be used by the President to establish CCC, WPA, U. S. Postal Bank and other types of programs to get our nation working, purchasing and expanding once again.
Remember plants do not grow by watering their leaves, but by watering and fertilizing their roots.  Our roots, workers, wage earners, our people, fellow citizens, have gone without water and fertilizer to long!
