A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

The orange pinpoints are the location of each organized group of Kossacks.

Have you ever played at being a matchmaker?

I did it a couple of months back. I never did it before. I'll never do it again.

Seemed like they'd be a cute couple. They had both independently told me they were interested in the other person. Both were unattached. Both had told me they didn't know how to break the ice with the other. From some dark corner of my mind I recalled how to break the ice between two people. Maybe, instead, I should've recalled that "butt out" doesn't just describe an alternative method of how to leave a room.

What I actually did instead was get involved. I knew both were exceptionally good-hearted people. I made "subtle" mentions to each of the good intentions of the other. I vouched for the sincerity, honesty and earnestness of both. I did so on several occassions. They both were lonely and it seemed they might be happier lonely together. So I butted in.

Mission aborted!
Now it is a couple of months later. Night before last was their official first night living together. They were both scheduled to move into the triplex unit next to mine. Only one showed up. She was livid. Last night I heard from the man who is livid as well. The question of sexual orientations has flared up into a possible deal-breaker.

My two friends are in a "heterosexual" relationship. Supposedly they are both in love with each other. There's a snag though. The question is which one of the two is Gay. Or both. Or neither. Each of them now strongly believes the other is Gay, and that they themselves are straight. No one is mentioning being Bi. I don't get it. I can't tell if there is much credence to their fears or if this is just a form of havng cold feet. Neither has ever appeared homophobic to me. The woman has had a couple of brief affairs with women at some point in the past. The man hasn't had any affairs with men, but does text photos of himself back and forth with Gay co-workers (supposedly nightly). They are now obsessing over those things and have embroiled themselves in a jealousy match right at the moment they're set to move in together. Hurt fee-fees galore.

Adding to the complexity of who is what sexual orientation, is the fact that they come from very different ethnic/cultural/linguistic/religious backgrounds. One is primarily a Spanish speaker. The other doesn't speak Spanish at all. They seem to communicate well except when the dialogue is heated. It is very heated now. Love always finds a way, but sometimes it finds a way into a rabbitt-hole.

So I don't know how this story ends. I will soon I guess.

It all reminds me of the matchmaking bamboozling that went on when my Jewish and very Republican uncle finally got married for the first time at 55 years of age. A matchmaker had hooked him up with a non-Jewish woman. She decided to convert to Judaism to please her prospective future husband. If he had ever had any interest in Judaism it was so long ago in the past that no one in the family knew about it. So he then had to, in effect, "convert" to Judaism to please his prospective wife. Both then went to Temple every week for ten years until he passed away. I never really knew if either one was really religiously Jewish, or just pleasing the other by pretending to be.

Likewise, I can't even tell if my two friends really think the other is Gay, or if they're just using that as a vehicle for something else. In any case, this one is way over my head. In fact, most relationships are. I'm uniquely unqualified to be a matchmaker.

So have you ever attempted to play Cupid's part? Did it work out? Do any of the involved parties still speak to you?

Silicon Valley Kossacks Protest the KXL Pipeline
at President Obama's Personal Appearance in San Jose

by navajofor Silicon Valley Kossacks

Glen The Plumber alerted us about 350.org's notice that President Obama was speaking at a fundraiser in Silicon Valley on May 8th. 350.org rallied about 1500 people and the Silicon Valley Kossacks attended. Since it was so last minute only a few of us could attend but we brought our Daily Kos/Connect! Unite! Act! banner to remind President Obama that we helped elect him.

SFKossacks Roll Out the Red Carpet for
LeftOfYou and Expat Okie

by navajofor SFKossacks

On May 13th, the SFKossacks welcomed LeftOfYou and Expat Okie visiting from Chicago. They're here on a cruise up the West Coast after LeftOfYou retired last week from the US Postal system. What a pleasure to meet them and enjoy some quintessential San Francisco cuisine — Chinese deem sum.

We had a wonderful gathering and fantastic food. The bonus for Daily Kos is that LeftOfYou offered to lead a new group for St. Louis, Missouri when he moves there soon. I took him up on that. What a great day! We wished them well as they headed up the coast to Vancouver.

DKos Asheville Meet Up News

by randalltfor DKos Asheville

The Asheville Kossacks had another successful meet-up with excellent food supplied and prepared by Gordon20024. There's excellent food pr0n in the diary, btw. Steelergrrl brought tomato plants to give away. randallt handed out large Register to Vote signs along with information handouts on the new North Carolina voting law and a comprehensive guide to obtaining an ID for voting. Asheville Kossacks have been setting the example of GOTV for the rest of us. Kossack cultjake told an informative story on his new work on the precinct level of politics. randallt also made Asheville Kossack nametag lanyards for everyone. I'm impressed with all the ideas he's thought of to Connect, unite and activate his group.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
