I have just finished reading PFAW's Right Wing Watch about the thirty million Christian Taliban who will be taking over Washington, DC, sending our president to Gitmo and replacing him with a litany of Attila the Hun haters (he was too liberal), including South Carolina's own Jim Demented. Surprisingly, Ann Coulter wasn't included on this best-of-the-best list. Come to think of it, there was only one (token?) Hispanic, no blacks, and no females on their list of our new leaders----kind of a staunch segregationists' wish list, all of whom believe, deep down, they'd never should have given women the vote, let alone blacks.
But I digress; this is a diary about ignorance and its relationship to bliss. It's pretty obvious that these people don't represent the sharpest knives in the drawer or the brightest front porch lights, but, admittedly, they have the courage of their convictions. That's one of the nice aspects of being ignorant, such people believe that whatever they think is right is right because, if it wasn't, they never would have thought it in the first place and, besides, if you dig deeply enough into the Bible and have enough faith, you'll know they're right.
So, if these people are as ignorant as their speech and actions suggest, why aren't they blissful? Why are they all so self-righteous and gawdawful angry? I think that ignorance can be bliss; I also think that ignorance can be cured by education. It's only a problem when we have people so empowered by their own beliefs that they refuse to be educated by facts and the obvious; when that happens we leave the realm of Ignorance and enter the realm of Stupid. Thus some very bright person (not me) coined the phrase, "Ignorance can be cured by education, but we're stuck with Stupid."
The answer to the question then is that these people are not blissful because they are not ignorant, they are stupid.
