Trey Gowdy's circus hearing on Benghazi (formerly Issa's hearing)
Democrats are still weighing whether and to what extent they will participate in the GOP's new #Benghazi committee, but with House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa pressing forward with his own #Benghazi investigation, the new committee can't afford complacency lest they lose the limelight. Therefore...
...the seven Republicans appointed by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, are scheduled to convene later this week for what a House GOP aide described Monday as an “organizational” meeting.
Moreover, the committee as already established internal rules. Among them, a rule guaranteed to bring a burst of even more hot air to the Benghazi process by giving committee members more than five minutes to ask questions give self-absorbed stump speeches:
Granting select committee members, during panel hearings, more than five minutes at a time to question witnesses. [Note: It's a select committee, so that refers to all committee members, not just select ones. -JL]
If you've ever seen one of these hearings, you know what that means: It means committee members will deliver even longer prefaces to their questions. On the one hand, that'll make C-SPAN coverage of their hearings even more intolerable. On the other, the more Republicans speak about this stuff, the more they come off as rambling incoherent tinfoil conspiracy nuts.

Also worth noting: The committee will be given access to intelligence data that had been denied to Issa's committee and will also have the authority to review any document it desires from any other committee in the House. In short, not only will this committee be a dedicated to fueling the fantasies of every #Benghazi conspiracy theorist on the right, it will also serve as a giant raised middle finger to Darrell Issa. And that might be the best possible thing you could say about it.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:

  •  How you handle this (6+ / 0-)

1 - wait until the bloviation is finished and the actual question is asked.

2 - Wait for a little bit quietly.

3 - ask for a glass of water.

4 - ask for the question to be restated.

    5 - sip water

6 - maybe consider taking a stab at the question.

And that’s when the audio cut out. Seconds later, footage faded to a shot of the capitol from outside.

Moments later, someone at C-SPAN took to Twitter and explained: “C-SPAN has no control over the U.S. House TV cameras – the Speaker of the House does.”

    •  ah, but will they be there in force if it's not (0+ / 0-)

bi-partisan?  Sure, they'll be there in some fashion (fox will be there 25 hours a day if they can figure out how to modify the rotation of the earth. This, after all, is the fox equivalent of the Malaysian airliner) but not gavel to gavel if it's nothing but a partisan campaign commercial. Even woof blister can figure that out. It doesn't look good for one party to do all the talking and the media knows that people don't give a shit why the Democrats aren't there. Put the Democrats in the room and I believe they'll cover it full time.

I'm also not sure that having 5 minute questions is going to attract media attention besides fox.  Most people find that sort of thing off putting and self aggrandizing (because it is). I can't believe the idiot pubs actually think that's going to attract full time coverage.

      •  Maybe not full time, but clips. (1+ / 0-)
        Recommended by:

I'm thinking this is one occasion when the media's He Said/She Said kind of shallow coverage would help us. (Fox will perform as it does, and we shouldn't care. It's the others who matter.)

The media would have to cover a question/answer on the other side to be balanced. Even Woof would have to. If there's no other side, I think the media will still cover the hearings in clips and the GOP will keep pointing to the Democrats' empty chairs, and that will be the news.

The GOP will have seven seats, so we get five. We need a clever good-sound-bite five.

  •  Apparently, Cong. Grayson wants on the committee. (0+ / 0-)

    Steelergirl's diary breaks the news.

    Business Insider has details:

"I'll be asking why there's no select committee on income inequality. I'll be asking why there's no select committee on immigration reform. I'll be asking why there's no select committee on the minimum wage. I'll be asking why there's no select committee on anything that has anything to do with the lives of ordinary Americans," Grayson said.

Grayson predicted he would draw attention to the 60 people who died from embassy attacks under the Bush administration, as well as questioning why there wasn't a select committee established to investigate the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack.

Unfortunately, all those challenges would only properly be directed to committee members or its chairman, not to witnesses. But we might hope that Cong. Grayson would do his work cleverly and scalpel-like, i.e. not in his patented bombastic style. If so, he could assemble quite a sequence of questions for the witnesses!
