An important new development arose his morning in the entire matter of Detroit Bulk Storage, Inc., the firm responsible for the past storage and marine trans-shipment of petroleum coke produced by the Marathon Ashland Petroleum Detroit Refinery.
You may remember seeing video of heavy fugitive dust emissions from their operation on the banks of the Detroit River near the Ambassador Bridge within the Detroit City Limits.
Detroit Bulk Storage, Inc. was proposing a new site for their operation within the city limits of River Rouge, MI, a location further downriver at a location on the Detroit River within the U.S. Steel facility
This morning, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality- Air Quality Division (MDEQ-AQD) announced its proposed decision to deny the new source review air quality permit application for Detroit Bulk Storage at the River Rouge location.
MDEQ-AQD has scheduled a public hearing for 6 PM on June 25, 2014 and comment period to receive public input on the proposed denial. The public hearing on the permit denial matter will be held at the River Rouge High School Auditorium.
MDEQ-AQD determined the company application to be deficient on the matter of the fugitive dust emission control plans and physical elements that were planned by Detroit Bulk Storage. MDEQ-AQD found that granting the company's application would cause violations of MDEQ-AQD emission control rules.
All of the MDEQ_AQD public document release package in anticipation of the public hearing can be found here under "Detroit Bulk Storage."
The company's new source review air quality permit application and considerable background material can be viewed here.
Detroit and River Rouge residents concerned about this matter should consider reviewing these documents and attending the public hearing on June 25, 2014 in River Rouge, MI.
