Abraham Lincoln's seminal address to the Cooper's Union in early 1860 vaulted him into the pantheon of anti-slavery federalists, and helped make him President.
Secession was about protecting a special economic interest, slavery, and its beneficiaries. We see exactly the same politics conducted today to protect vested economic interests.
Lincoln's observation of secessionists - that they were robbers who said "stand and deliver, or I shall kill you, and then YOU will be a murderer!" is true today of the Republican Party, which will gladly threaten the country with financial default in order to protect the privileged. Something to remember and to remind people of as November approaches.
