From time to time, we talk about community matters around this kitchen table. The Community Quilt Project is all about community, kindness, and acknowledging that we are all together, even when some of us might be rocked by events in life -- the sort of events that can make us feel isolated. Tonight I want to share an interview with Dave in Northridge about his quilt, a quilt we made as a community to support him as he was reeling from the sudden loss, from a heart attack, of his love of more than forty years.
Widowhood is always hard -- but for our LGBT brothers and sisters such as our brother Dave, it is particularly hard because the social mechanisms to support the grieving are not quite in place the way they are for heterosexual couples. However, things are getting better -- and as gay marriage is legally accepted in more and more places we hope the time will soon come that everyone is supported kindly and fully when a life partner dies. In the meantime, Dave in Northridge and commonmass are going to start a DKos support group for LGBT widows...and we quilters are now making a quilt for newpioneer who is grieving the death of his husband, Juan, from cancer. It will be the fourth quilt we will have made for a widowed gay man.
Without further ado, here is the video of Dave in Northridge with his quilt, lovingly produced by linkage, who also was the interviewer:
In case you missed it, the interview with remembrance about her quilt can be found here.

Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with kossacks who are caring and supportive of one another. So bring your stories, jokes, photos, funny pics, music, and interesting videos, as well as links—including quotations—to diaries, news stories, and books that you think this community would appreciate. Readers may notice that most who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but newcomers should not feel excluded. We welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
