Climate change doesn't recognize international borders, so this matters:
David Cameron, the British prime minister, wants to cut subsidies for onshore wind energy -- and potentially ban new turbines.
This is a terrible move for our shared global climate, yet Cameron's allies insist the turbines are a "blot on the countryside." Priorities, amiright?
You and I know better. Weather disasters fueled by climate change -- like Superstorm Sandy or the devastating floods Britain itself experienced just this winter -- are a far bigger "blot" than any wind farm. Rolling back clean energy is an absurd move that would have devastating consequences far beyond the British Isles, so we can't just look the other way and let it happen.
As prime minister, David Cameron cares about Britain's international reputation -- your voice can make a difference.
Tell Britain's prime minister: The whole world is watching -- don't cook the planet by cutting wind subsidies or limiting new onshore wind energy!
Britain's energy minister had the nerve to tell the BBC, "We now have enough [taxpayer]-funded onshore wind in the pipeline to meet our renewable energy commitments." Huh? With a global crisis as severe as climate change, there's no such thing as enough clean energy -- not until the problem is solved!
Cameron thinks that because he's not also cutting his support for solar and offshore wind energy, he can keep pretending he's green. But when a crisis is as global and as deadly as climate change, we can't limit ourselves to only the shiniest solutions -- and a true world leader wouldn't restrict efforts to just two out of three technologies.
If we're serious about tackling climate change, then the planet needs as much onshore wind energy as it can get. David Cameron needs to hear that message from every corner of the globe.
Prime Minister David Cameron wants to be a world leader, so let's remind him: It is every world leader's duty to do everything they can to fight climate change. Stop attacking clean energy!
Another British prime minister, Winston Churchill, once told the U.S. Congress, "I avow my hope and faith, sure and inviolate, that in the days to come the British and American peoples will for their own safety and for the good of all walk together side by side in majesty, in justice and in peace." [6]
Here in America, we're working hard to expand our clean energy economy. Let's hope that Cameron will do the same in Britain so that, together as before, our two nations can tackle the climate crisis "side by side."
