Memorial Day 2014
Flowering in my yard this morning. One of my favorite plants.
Asclepias tuberosa - common names are
Butterflyweed, Butterfly milkweed, Orange milkweed, Pleurisy root
It's in the milkweed family but it doesn't have milky sap. A sure way to identify it from all the varieties now sold as "butterflyweed". A couple more photos (in Lighbox) below the fold.
More names for this plant:
Common names include Butterfly Weed, Canada Root, Chieger Flower, Chiggerflower, Fluxroot, Indian Paintbrush, Indian Posy, Orange Milkweed, Orange root, Orange Swallow-wort, Pleurisy Root, Silky Swallow-wort, Tuber Root, Yellow Milkweed, White-root, Windroot, Butterfly Love, Butterflyweed, and Butterfly Milkweed.
The first year or 2 after I quit cutting the grass, this native plant came up, it had one stalk, then 2, last year 3 and this year 4 stalks.
The grandkids are supposed to show up sometime today. Guess I can grill dogs and veggies, and pasta salad is ready to go. I even have drinks. Not bad for an old bachelor.
Your turn - who's out and about on this Memorial Day 2014 and what do you see?
