I've been getting e mails this morning about Exene Cervenka, telling me to look at her internet posts. They are really upsetting. She's on the "truther" side now about the mass murder in California. She says she thinks the episode was faked.
This really hurts. Her beautiful anti-war lyrics, her feminism, her brave songs about our world...when I was breaking up with my family 15 yars ago, her songs felt like they were written to me, ad her defiant attitude helped me pick up the remains.
One commentor said it's not unusual for old punk rockers to become reactionaries....I think that's bullshit.
What could have happened? could her MS have affected her like this?
I'm really upset, and hurt.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

As a partially rehabilitated punk myself, I find that the original punk rock movement engaged a lot of troubled people in conflict with themselves.

Don't know about Exene in any detail, but idiosyncratic people often evolve in idiosyncratic ways. I've known ex-punks who became religious zealots, for example. Exene appears to have become a gun nut, advocating open-carrying, so this conspiracy humbug fits with that mindset.

Love her early albums but haven't checked into what she's up to lately. Now I'm very curious.

She's tweeting and posting this truly crazy shit.

Very tragic when the author of the searing critique of patriarchy expressed in "He's Got a She, " can't acknowledge even the basic existence of massacre grounded in extreme misogyny.

It's like there's some kind of infectious spore given off by firearms that causes human brains to become deeply fevered, believing that EVERYTHING is conspiring to harm the precious gun and NOTHING else is more important.

Some commentators discuss the need of aging rebels to find something to renew their shock value.  Others ask about possible mental effects from MS or its meds.  Myself, I start to wonder about delayed and cumulative effects from ingestion of mind-altering drugs.  I have known quite a few acid burnouts, and long-term paranoia seems to be something that many have in common.

Like the diarist, I'm sad about this.

Not a fan of the band myself, but I remember how I felt when Michelle Shocked went nuts.

  •  I played in So Cal bands (4+ / 0-)

during the late 70's and '80's. I lived in Orange County, just south of the LA punk scene in which X gained so much traction during that era. The punk bands I played in shared turf, sadly, with the so-called "surf nazi" bands--sort of a West Coast corollary to the reactionary UK skinhead music scene (our alternative punk scene in OC originally mixed equal parts Buzzcocks & Black Flag).
Growing up in Huntington Beach, California (aka Surf City USA) meant that you were inevitably exposed to the whole (proto-Bagger) Bircher ethic which, to this day, holds sway amongst Orange County's entrenched white conservative enclave.
With the benefit of hindsight, it is clear to me now that, among my crowd, there was a distinct ideological winnowing between those of my contemporaries who would go on to become either progressives or else good old-fashioned Orange County Bircher/Baggers-----which is what crossed my mind when I learned that Cervenca (evidently) falls so clearly into the wingnut gun-fetish camp.

but shit, exene???? I guess from 1982 till now I was caught up in a celebrity culture thing, just like any fan. I feel pretty betrayed by her, makes it worse to hear my  wife sayin "Ha ha, your big hero chick is just another nut".

the bands in those days were a big part of my life, like lots of peoples'.

I feel so weird about letting this affect me, it's really emotional. Guess I just have to get over it.

    •  thinking about it now, (0+ / 0-)

if you take a kid that never fit in to anything, and make love of our American music the dominant thing in her life, and give her bravery so that she could stand up against the world, and self confidence (though fragile) so she could defend her self, and humility so that she could love her fans even when they made it hard, well...
if you call that batshit crazy, I guess you're entitled to do so.

I was sure no better than her.

I'm just sorry as hell this freakish change has occurred.
