GOP Rep. Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania did the right thing when he announced his support for marriage equality earlier this week, even if he did wait until after the Republican primary to do so. But as Steve Benen notes, Dent does not have a lot of company among his Republican colleagues:
There are currently 278 Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill – 233 in the House and 45 in the Senate. As of today, six of them believe that if two consenting adults fall in love and want to get married, they should be allowed to do so.
That’s just 2.1% of all congressional Republicans, up from 1.8% the day before.
To put that 2.1 percent into some perspective, check out support for marriage equality across the nation, particularly among
the youngest voters:
So yeah, 2.1 percent is a little better than 0 percent. But it's a far cry from 78 percent. The question of whether marriage equality is here to stay is settled. At this point, the only thing left to be determined is how long it will take foot draggers on the right to embrace it.
