ramara's quilt
My sister, Ann, and I have been making community quilts here on Daily Kos for a few years now. The project is an invitation to the community to be kind to individuals who are facing hard life challenges such as illness or loss. Loving and supportive messages are transcribed onto muslin and sewn into colorful quilts. The project has become a popular feature because it gives people a tangible and positive way to express their love and support to someone who is suffering, something that can otherwise be very hard in our culture. Our culture generally does not "do" illness or death or hardship very well...in fact, we tend to shy away from those things as if they were contagious (they are not). And it is a shame because community love is a very healing force.
Last year, at NN13, linkage was so kind as to interview a number of the people who had brought their community quilts for a flashmob and he has been producing these interviews as YouTube videos. This video is of ramara.
Ramara is a cancer survivor -- but that's not why we made the quilt. She had adopted a child with fetal alcohol syndrome -- and he grew into a man who had a lot of problems from this condition. He had broken into ramara's home several times to steal from her and to threaten her -- and at the time we made the quilt, ramara was still sleeping on the couch rather than in her bedroom. The bedroom was still littered with glass from a break in and ramara was too stricken to clean it up, too anxious to get a good night's sleep, too fearful in her own home which should be a safe space. Well, you can hear about it in her own words -- but from the time the community put its arms around her in a quilt diary, things began to get better. That is the power of Love.
