On May 30th, the President of the United States proclaimed June LGBT Pride Month. As Pride events kick off all across the country, people numbering in the millions will be taking to the streets to celebrate our truth and our equality. And there will be funnel cakes!
I have been going to Pride events for decades now and they have always been deeply moving and powerful. They started off as daring movements calling for the simple recognition of our human dignity during a time of all-encompassing contempt and hostility.
Our brave pioneers led a movement that steadfastly became politically powerful. It grew and spread and refused to ever be silenced. Pride marches became events where pleas for tolerance turned into demands for equality. Even as they were heaped on with scorn and ridicule, people began to listen.
When the AIDS crisis began to devour our communities, these events became a place to collectively mourn and remember and demand Ronald Fucking Reagan look us in the eye.
As the years passed, our perseverance began to pay off in exponentially greater victories. Our Pride events have always reflected our hard-fought place at the American table. Now, hope is rapidly giving way to reality. Our Pride Marches continue to be a celebration of our love, whether we were marching for our very lives or marching in triumph. The one common thread throughout is that they have always adapted and evolved to become an effective tool in our committed movement.
The Pride events this year promise to be the most joyful of all time. The only people who are denying the inevitability that we will win our struggle for equal rights are those still profiteering from yesterday's dustbin-bigotry.
They are understandably and advisedly welcome to sit this one out.
The rest of you are invited to the time of your life. From Los Angeles to Key West, Seattle to New York and all points in between, we are throwing the biggest party we've ever had, so don your gay apparel and join us!
There may be some straight people out there who think "Well, this is their event. Even though I support their cause, I don't want to impose myself." Nonsense. Whether you know it or not, you have always been welcome. Without you, we wouldn't be celebrating at all. Every person who supports our equality belongs there and as a full participant. So bring your kids, bring your grandparents, and get ready. We are going to party!
