Many kudos to President Obama and his EPA for proposing new rules that would significantly curb emissions at power plants.
It is clear, however, there is more to be done. For those of us eager to see the Administration's plan as a starting point and not the last word on the issue, I highly recommend checking out Citizens Climate Lobby.
With more than 180 chapters across the U.S. and Canada (and now internationally too!), CCL is working to build the political will needed to restore a livable climate. Their highest legislative priority is a revenue-neutral price on carbon, one that is high enough to help us transition to a clean energy future. (As a market-based solution, it also has the support of a number of conservatives--former Sec. of State George Schultz is the newest advisory board member.)
Local chapters work together to meet and build relationships with their Members of Congress, write letters to the editor and op-eds, push for editorials and other endorsements, and organize locally to build a national political movement.
I've been working with the organization for a year now-- a few of us started a local chapter after I learned about CCL from Bill McKibben, at a book signing he did here. The great thing about CCL is how supportive the organization is; there's a great structure of support for starting and maintaining local chapters
CCL's national conference is in DC this June 22-24. More than 600 citizens are already scheduled to head to Washington to talk to every member of Congress about the solutions that are needed now.
In the words of climate scientist Dr. James Hansen: "If you want to join the fight to save
the planet, to save creation for your grandchildren, there is no more effective step you could take than becoming an active member of this group.”
If you are interested in working with a very effective group towards legislative solutions, plan to spend an hour this Wednesday evening checking out CCL's weekly introductory call. CCL's 200th chapter could be the one YOU start!
