According to Bergdahl's e-mails his unit ran over a Afghani child just for the fun of it.the ones in unit that did it would be in big trouble if it could be proven.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I don't know why he would lie about his unit running over a child with an armored vehicle?

In the second-to-last paragraph of the e-mail, Bowe wrote about his broader disgust with America's approach to the war – an effort, on the ground, that seemed to represent the exact opposite of the kind of concerted campaign to win the "hearts and minds" of average Afghans envisioned by counterinsurgency strategists. "I am sorry for everything here," Bowe told his parents. "These people need help, yet what they get is the most conceited country in the world telling them that they are nothing and that they are stupid, that they have no idea how to live." He then referred to what his parents believe may have been a formative, possibly traumatic event: seeing an Afghan child run over by an MRAP. "We don't even care when we hear each other talk about running their children down in the dirt streets with our armored trucks... We make fun of them in front of their faces, and laugh at them for not understanding we are insulting them."

  •  That occurred to me too. (5+ / 0-)

His letters home indicate that the people in his detail were terrible soldiers and doing terrible stuff.
The speed with which they came out against him and the seemingly coordinated attack could well be covering fire. If he faces a court martial, he might have some dirt to throw on his former cohort.

If I ran this circus, things would be DIFFERENT!

with this smarmy little prique.  Long ago when I was in the US Army there were more than a few of these guys, kissed just enough ass to get some stripes & then their shit no longer stank.  I can see this guy laughing at a kid getting run over.

  •  Tipped and recc'd for discussion. (0+ / 0-)

God knows, certain members of his unit are generating plenty of their own discussion out there. And we don't necessarily know their motivation.

When Gen Stanley McChrystal and Chuck Hagel both agree that there are still facts to be learned, well then I think there are facts to be learned.

    •  I find it a bit humorous.... (0+ / 0-)

in how quickly General McCrystal has been rehabilitated here because he said something that we like when it wasn't so long ago that everyone hated him.

All I am going to accept so far is that Bergdahl walked away from his post without permission and was then probably captured at some point. What was in his head or what happened after he left, I don't know. However, in the same vein, to say that he served with honor and distinction after what was apparently known by the administration was really silly. Why feed the Repubs more talking points when it isn't necessary? I don't know if Bergdahl is a deserter or a traitor, but I sure don't think he is a hero, either. I'm going to wait and see.

I was also a bit embarrassed for Hagel when he was asked if any soldiers were killed while looking for Bergdahl. Instead of saying "no", he gave the old "I don't have any information on that" which we know from the Bush years means, "Well, yeah it probably happened but I haven't yet read the report on my desk cause I likes me some plausible deniability."

      •  Rehabilitated? Uh, no. (0+ / 0-)

My point is that when people along the spectrum agree that it's best to wait to wait and see, then I thinking sheet to wait and see.

And for the record, that's a position I took before either man's position was made public.

  •  Amendment V (0+ / 0-)

    to our nations Constitution:

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence be twice be put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

The emboldened part is important, in more simple terms it means: innocent until proven guilty. Has Sgt. Bergdahl been convicted by a jury of his peers? Has he been given the Assistance of Council? No? Therefore the Question of whether he is a deserter or not has not yet been answered. And accusation of a crime does not equal the crime itself. Justice is something all people deserve, regardless of notoriety. Something oft forgotten in these days of mass media witch trials.
