Where the hell are you guys. Why are you missing in action in a crucial aspect of the media wars. I'm talking about talk radio. Liberals are literally starving out there in that hostile territory known as Radio Land. And you guys seem like you don't care. Bill Press, liberal talk show host and progressive commentator says that you guys would rather give your money to candidates, rather than support the more long term and strategically important venue of talk radio.
George Soros and Tom Steyer, and some other wealthy donors such as David Geffen and Stephen Spielberg, could focus their money on building some Democratic media infrastructure. Why have the Democrats allowed two companies (Clear Channel and Cumulus) to go unchallenged in their "near monopoly" of talk radio. Those companies have recently put the squeeze even FURTHER on that venue of political discussion. In the past six months, those two conservative dominated companies, which already controlled about 90% of talk radio stations, have found a way to get liberal talkers, such as Bill Press and Thom Hartmann and Stephanie Miller off the air in some major West Coast cities. They did these by converting stations that they own to either a sports talk radio station or a business and financial talk radio station or just another conservative talk radio station. As if our country needs another conservative talk radio station.
Denver AM 760 was, until recently, a strictly progressive radio station. No more. As of about a month ago, it is now just another station for business talk and conservative political talk. And that's sad. Because Colorado is a swing state that could be very crucial in the 2016 and 2020 elections
No two companies should EVER have been allowed to own that many stations and dominate political talk to that extent in the first place.
I do not EVER hear the Democrats proposing how to rectify this situation. I don't see deep pocket Democrats showing any willingness to buy some radio stations. Al Gore got a huge bundle of money about a year ago when he and a partner sold Current TV to Al-Jazeera for millions of dollars. What did he and his partner DO with all that money ? They COULD have invested it in Democratic media "infrastructure". Such as starting a Democratic Cable TV station. If Oprah Winfrey has enough money to start a Cable TV company of her own, why can't some wealthy Democrats, with some financial help from the Democratic National Committee in Washington D.C., start a cable channel of their own. A station where we could have Democratic viewpoints broadcasting 24 hours a day. If several stations can broadcast religious programming 24 hours a day (and they do) why can't we Democrats start a cable TV company devoted to our party and promoting our party's candidates and their viewpoints ....... all the time ? Yes, wealthy Democrats ? I'm all ears.
