Welcome to bookchat where you can talk about anything...books, plays, essays, and books on tape. You don’t have to be reading a book to come in, sit down, and chat with us.
Summer has come to Michigan at last. Hubby brought in peonies a few days ago and just before that an iris bouquet. Hubby doesn’t have the raft out, yet, so I am not sure what the water temp is in the lake, but soon he will be swimming.
Michigan is blessed with lakes and beaches. In years past, I enjoyed our Great Lakes. I have been on beaches at Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, and Lake Huron. Oddly enough, I did not take books with me back in those days. I was too busy playing or watching the waves.
But it is the time of year when it is fun to think of tucking a few books into a beach bag to enjoy while under an umbrella on a beach or at poolside. Every year when I write this topical diary I realize that while many people want lighter reading in the summer, some people are able to take vacation time and relax to read the tomes they have on their TBR pile that they have waited to read all year.
“What are you reading?” is a favorite question when you see people engrossed in a good book. I don’t bother them, but I might try to peek at the title.
So what do people consider to be summer reading? What new books are coming out this summer?
1. The biggest deal with my friends right now is the new Gabaldon book in the Outlander series. Written in My Own Heart's Blood (Outlander Series #8) is a tome, but it has been long awaited.

2. On June 17th, Top Secret Twenty-One (Stephanie Plum Series #21) by Janet Evanovich is coming out and is certain to be a favorite beach book.

3. On July 8th, The Girls of August by Anne Rivers Siddons looks interesting. I used to read her books, but somehow I stopped. It may be time to try another one for the summer daze.

4. Another book that many of us have been waiting for is coming on August 26th:
The Long Way Home (Armand Gamache Series #10) by Louise Penny

5. On July 8th, a definite fluff and fun mystery is coming. I have enjoyed Donna’s books though no brain cells are used.
The Good, the Bad, and the Emus: A Meg Langslow Mystery by Donna Andrews

6. Another favorite funny duo is coming out on August 5th.
Paw and Order: A Chet and Bernie Mystery by Spencer Quinn

7. I will try another mystery by Rennie Airth coming on August 14th set in 1947.
The Reckoning: A John Madden Novel by Rennie Airth

8. I am curious about this book that came out in January though it would not be an easy read.
The Invention of Wings: A Novel by Sue Monk Kidd

9. Just out in May and on my TBR pile:
Crown of Renewal (Paladin's Legacy Series #5) by Elizabeth Moon

Of course it is fun in the summer to take an old favorite with you to re-read and enjoy.
10. I am thinking about re-reading A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson.

Please put a note in the box saying the donation is from a DK member in connection with the July 18 donation of quilts, scarves and teddy bears.
Since I send books by media mail and I can’t include a note, I think I will put under my address label the words, “Daily Kos Project”.
Note from a comment below:
Media Mail
DOES, I repeat DOES, permit a very brief note along the lines of "July 18th donation via Daily Kos".
The examples given in the actual official rate description are along the lines of a note saying only "Happy Birthday, Mom!" as okay (where a card enclosed would be against the rules, circumventing the first class stamp as a NO NO). I was active at Paperbackswap for quite a while, and their receipts/invoices were fine for all of the packages that had been opened for inspection.
