Kalliope

Means "beautiful voice" from Greek καλλος (kallos) "beauty" and οψ (ops) "voice". In Greek mythology she was a goddess of epic poetry and eloquence, one of the nine Muses.

Join us every Tuesday afternoon at the Daily Kos community political poetry club.

Your own poetry is always welcome in the comments.

Bongos, berets & turtle neck sweaters optional.

The keyboard is mightier than the sword.

Changed, grown and spread
over trees, over field and fen,
above the reeds on the pond.

Mist-like, it hovers in our heads,
behind eyes it abides. Our ears open,
voices of our inner gods prophesy.

Will you make the elements your enemy?
Lash the earth, spill and spew poison,
choke the life from your own mother?

Why do you foul the nest that shelters you?
Why slap the hand that caresses?
Why punch the mouth that kisses your cheek?

There is no other home for you,
no other welcome, no roof, no hearth
apart from this spherical cottage.

Wipe your feet. Wash your hands.
Look to the rafters and thatch.
Make amends with your ancestors, sleeping in the earth.
