He's a regular on Fox and Morning Joe, so don't expect much from him.
Whoa, it's been like six months since we've made fun of National Journal's hilariously dense editor Ron Fournier.

Last we saw him, his "head hurt" from trying to understand filibuster reform (his words), and he thought Third Way's op-ed claiming Democrats would benefit politically from cutting Social Security was a "takedown of professional Left's magical thinking" (again, his words).

So what brings us back to Fournier today? Soccer.

First, start with an insufferably stupid premise based on an incorrect assumption:

Trying to figure this out: If politics were like soccer, and you could advance by losing, Eric Cantor would be Speaker?
That's so stupid it hurts. The U.S. did not "advance by losing". The team advanced by coming in second in the toughest group in the World Cup, one that included the second and fourth highest-ranked teams in the world, as well as a stellar Ghana team. The fact that they lost their last game was immaterial. That's like saying that Boston advanced to the 2013 playoffs by losing, because they lost the last game of the regular season to the Orioles.

The U.S. got enough points to advance. Eric Cantor did not get enough votes to advance. End of stupid attempt at stupid analogy. So Washington City Paper editor Mike Madden tried to be helpful, and it all goes downhill from there, as you'll see below the fold.

@ron_fournier Try thinking about it as if the U.S. advanced by winning first game and tying second. Loss in third became immaterial.
Sensible, right?
@MikeMadden not buying it
Figures. If you can't think about filibuster reform without getting a headache and think that Third Way has anything of worth to say on Social Security, then it follows that the concept of a simple four-team, three-game tournament is well beyond reach. And rather than sit there and work things out in that addled brain of his, he does the conservative thing and wave it off, "I'm not buying it", as if it's a matter of opinion.

Ladies and gentlemen, I'll remind you again, this is the National Journal's editorial director. Kinda explains why the Beltway media is so bad, huh?

One more:

Sorry, one more issue:

#USA lost game.
#USA advances.

Is this #Obama's fault or to his credit?

He really is that stupid.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
