Here it comes, here it comes, here comes your 19th nervous breakdown....
This line from the Rolling Stones is appropriate at this moment because Chris McDaniel is the 19th (give or take) failed insurgent candidate that Sarah Palin has backed. She's got her knickers in a twist and is making those "rogue" noises again. But what this really illustrates is the horns of the GOP dilemma.
We have witnessed time and time again that in order to succeed in a GOoPer primary these days, one needs to be not only Conservative, but non-linearly Conservative. Believing in, and propagating the most ridiculous, unsubstantiated, conspiracy theories; playing the race card in the most retro ways imaginable, and being an all-around embarrassment to mainstream Republicans. Is it their bravado that appeals to the Palin-minded among us? Is it their faux patriotism?
The good news is that much unlike traditional pols, these JBS-Teabagger-Goldwater wannabees swing so far Right in the primaries (kind of like the far-infra-red part of the political spectrum), there is no possible way that they can reasonably moderate their rhetoric to suit the much different environment of a general election without looking more idiotic than they already do.
The even better news is that the current trend will persist. For every Chris McDaniel, Sharon Angle, Todd Akins, and Christine O'Donnell that goes down in flames, two more will pop up to take their place. And Sarah Palin will be right there to donate generously in the "word salad" department.
Good for us. Maybe even good for John McCain :)
