Religious freedom is not a monolithic thing. So SCOTUS stood with Christian businesses against contraception. So be it. Frankly, did we expect anything else? At least, it was close.

Now on the same day comes word of a remarkable interview Sir Elton John gave to Sky News of England (yes, I know it's part of the Murdoch "Death Star" empire). That makes this all the more remarkable. The subject was religion with Elton speculating on WWJD (What Would Jesus Do) if he were alive today. In it, he declares that the Catholic Church needs to allow priests to marry and that priestly celibacy as an idea is a dead duck-my words, not his.

At the risk of being sacrilegious, Amen, Sir Elton.

I have long believed that such a policy change would go a long way toward solving the problem of child abuse in the Catholic faith. Sir Elton goes to heap great praise on Pope Francis with which I heartily concur.

Although I am not a Catholic myself, one of my best friends is. Notice the words "best friends". We get along just fine and tolerate and respect each other's views. That's the main basis of Elton's praise for the Pope. His examples of inclusiveness and tolerance toward all, no matter their faith or lifestyle, should be followed by all.

Go to Sky News' website and check out the interview. It's food for thought and the soul.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  You know, with churches having just gained more (7+ / 0-)

power than women have in the United States, I don't really give a fuck about Catholic priests and their sexual activities.

  •  If you are tallking about pedophelia, no. (6+ / 0-)

Grown men don't have sex with little boys because they can't have sex with grown women. Grown men have sex with little boys because the idea of sex with a grown woman doesn't do it for them. Oh, they will marry a woman and have sex with her, but it's not gratifying to them.  And as a recovering Catholic  I can assure you that a priest has no trouble finding a willing adult lady parishioner to dally with if he so desired.  Talk about forbidden fruit!

There are some arguments that some (not all ) men may enter the priesthood partly because nobody asks them awkward questions like "When are you going to get married and settle down?"  So at best letting priests get married will simply blow their cover in that respect.

Jimmy Saville and his rancid crew perpetrated sexual abuse on minors even though most of them were married.

Besides, Elton John is a terrible source for advice, seeing as how he did the latest wedding for Limbaugh, a notorious homophobe supporter of a homophobic party.  To hell with them both.

There is something to be said for the notion that if the priesthood were open to men (and even women?) with a healthy sexuality; there would be fewer of them with unhealthy drives. And they would be more visible, as you note in your second paragraph.  While there have been cases of pedophelia in other religious settings./organizations it is not as rampant as it has been in the Catholic church, and this may well be due at least in part to the fact that church leaders are able to have sex lives.

  •  When priests marry, will they all (3+ / 0-)

call their children Jesus 'cause they like the name?

But seriously, (a) who the hell cares what an aging rocker thinks about the internal workings of a church he doesn't belong to, and (b) there is no "problem of child abuse in the Catholic faith" -- there's been a problem of child abuse among the Catholic clergy (among others exempt from criticism here). And the notion that it is caused by celibacy is as noxious as the notion that it is caused by homosexuality. The fact that you've long thought that marriage would fix or prevent sex abuse is belied by actual evidence -- like the fact that the vast, vast, vast majority of child sex abuse is committed by non-clergy (yes, even married people!) on their relatives and acquaintances.

  •  I read this. I don't feel better. And I can't ... (3+ / 0-)

...even figure out why you think I should.

Don't tell me what you believe, show me what you do and I will tell you what you believe.
