Why thank SCOTUS for a horrible decision? Because it has created the left version of the gun-rights single-issue voters:
Women enraged by Hobby Lobby, and the men who love (or at least respect) them.
I have hopes that they will turn out in droves this year to get rid of those who would control their reproductive lives.
Why has gun control failed? Because the most reliable voters are the single-issue NRA gun-rights voters. Politicians know they will turn out, especially in off-year, low turnout elections. The Colorado recall elections last year showed the power of zealous single-issue gun rights voters, who can be mobilized to turn out no matter what:
Groups with large constituencies often address a wide variety of issues. The AARP, for example, attempts to influence such diverse issues as Social Security, health care, energy, and ballot access laws. The NRA focuses almost exclusively on gun control, which enables its leaders to doggedly pursue their legislative ends. Perhaps more important, many NRA members are as single-minded as the organization itself. Polls often show that more Americans favor tightening gun control laws than relaxing them, but gun rights advocates are much more likely to be single-issue voters than those on the other side of the question. As a result, the NRA can reliably deliver votes. Politicians also fear the activism of NRA members.
The religious zealots have done what the Democrats and pro-choice could not: Broaden the pro-choice movement to encompass birth control. Like it or not, protection of birth control has a much wider constituency than abortion rights. Even some Republican Politicians twist themselves into knots to avoid appearing anti-birth control. Two cases in point:
Currently -- Corey Gardner's attempt to squirm out of his "personhood" support, while at the same time applauding Hobby Lobby, yet favoring OTC birth control -- Good luck with that, Corey.
Two years ago -- Mitt Romney attempted a 9.8 degree of difficulty double reverse flip flop, first opposing the Blunt amendment, then supporting the Blunt amendment, then saying "no one wants to ban birth control." (The voter judges gave him a failing 47%.)
Time to start organizing those droves.
